Boss Jack (Thin-ish Handle) - Do Spacers Work??

First, I absolutely love my choiless Boss Jack, and everything about it, including the handle shape. So I'm not considering exchanging it for anything else.

It is very comfortable to hold, but in some extreme use (chopping/batoning), I wish the handle was slightly thicker. I asked Garth if thicker handles could be put on it, but unfortunately they cannot. However, he said he could put spacers underneath the existing handles to thicken it up.

I think I may try this. Has anyone else done this with their Boss Jack? How do you like it?

Also, I have the Red/Black G10 scales on my Boss Jack. The spacers come in blue, yellow, black and white. I'm thinking black spacers...thoughts??

Thanks in advance!

If they offered red spacers I'd say go with red, but black is a close second. I don't have a BJ so I can't comment on the grip...

A cheaper, but less aesthetically pleasing alternative would be the addition of some grip tape, just throwing that out there.

I love my BOSS Jack to death, and agree the handles could use being a little thicker.

Liners will certainly help. Sometimes stacking two is necessary as they're very thin.

And liners/spacers definitely come in Red, Foo has several Busse blades with Red ones.

Thick Toxic Green Polyurethane Bushings !!

...actually the stuff does come in red.

Answer: YES! Spacers do indeed work!

The thin Boss Jack handle issue (for my hands) solved by George (who also does work for Liu Kang).

He did an awesome job putting double-liners - black and cinnamon - on my Boss Jack. He did an incredible job, and the thickness is now perfect.

A few pics of my new, better-fitting Boss Jack:

I don't think I would have anyone but Busse put the spacers on especially if it is gonna be a user. They have the correct press for the hollow tubes not just a hammer and punch.
My opinion.

AFAIK, other folk don't use a hammer and punch, in all the tutorials I've read, people talk about using an arbor press or a honking big vise with flare jigs.

It is certainly true that Busse won't warranty the handle work when it's done elsewhere, but I would expect the modder to stand behind his work for any repairs.

A vice and deck screws can be used to re fit new Tube/Rivets.

There are several tutorials on here.

LightGuy, sweet pictures. I'm glad you like it!

Bill, yes George warrants all of his work. Thanks but just because he doesnt show you how he does it doesn't mean he uses a hammer and punch. Wow, I haven't ever though about anything like that. You have a very creative mind.

Dan, did I say anything about George using a hammer and punch or not warrantying his work? Wow, so defensive. Is that because of a very guilty mind?:thumbdn:

Who is this Curious George? And why won't he post?
Yet he warranties his work?
Has Kang open his own custom shop in China?:confused:

Why don't you ask your friend Bill? He has hung out with and talked to him at three of the shows. And he does post on BF, been a gold member here for a good while. I believe you even sold him a knife.

Wow, what is up with this sub-forum??:confused:

Can't I just post a knife that I enjoy much more now that someone has done a very nice mod on it for me?? Why all the accusations and innuendos? Isn't this a hobby? Why can't people other than the Busse Custom shop do a mod without being crucified if I as the owner of the knife ask them to?

I'm sorry I decided to post follow-up pics now...just ridiculous. :thumbdn:

Hey LightGuy, I"m sorry but that had nothing to do with you. Everyone here is usually pretty nice and great about things. Thanks for sharing the pictures. Yes it is your knife and you do get to do whatever you want with it. So as long as you are happy with it, then I am happy for you and I am sure lots of other people are glad to hear you are too.
This is a great forum with some great guys! Trust me. I know you are a bit new but stick around and enjoy the fun. Sometimes you just ignore some stuff.
Glad to see you are still around, it's going to be a lot of fun.

Nice looking handle - That looks like the BJ proto, which is also thicker than the new LE's

Thanks. Yep, this one is a Proto .220" like the new CG version. I like the thickness - gives it a good heft for a smaller knife, but I spent a lot of time re-profiling the edge to be thinner. It was extremely thick almost all the way down to the very edge before. It's much better now.

I'm assuming they thickened-up the G10 scales on the LE version to compensate for the reduced blade thickness. This one had a pretty thin handle even with the thicker blade.

Nice looking job LG. I wonder if it would have looked better or worse with the black spacers on the blade and the red between.

Thanks. It's hard to tell what it would have looked like the other way around, but I think I would have liked it better this way. The black on the outside blends in to the handle so it's really hard to even tell it is there. I like it because it just looks like there are single cinnamon red liners, which stand out really well due to the black liners next to them. I really like the way it turned out.

I like your mod and no you can't do anything to your knife unless WE approve!

Obviously kidding, great mod and I too would like thicker slabs on my BJ. In my perfect world Fiddleback would put some of his slabs on my new BJ LE. I might never buy another knife again.
