Hey guys. Im not sure if I asked this question before in the past, but Im finally ready to buy another nice little blade. Im trying to decide between the BS, and the BS proto. Which would you guys recommend? If i order a CG from the Busse site, will i have to wait long? is there any benefit to one or the other.....mainly thickness wise? Im planning on stripping her if i get a cg, but if i did, would the proto still be thinner? thanks for any comments, the more the better.
Dave

I think the proto might be just a bit thinner still than a stripped CG. It's such a small difference that the CG may be the way to go to save a few bucks.

To be perfectly honest, the satin proto is a completely different knife and worth the extra money. If you had the two to handle, you could choose better. So this could be answered best by some that has both.
But if you only going to use it and money does matter, then it's with the wait to order one straight from Busse. But whichever you choose, you can't lose!

Thanks. Well, i am definitely planning on using her. I don't really care for the black paper all that much, but i was more talking about the Double cut version with the micarta handles, rather than the satin. the money doesn't matter much on this one, but i want the better performance. Would anyone care to add who might have held these two before? If no difference, than i will get the cg, as i will strip it. If the dc proto will be a better user for any reason, than i will go with that, and perhaps after scratching the coating, i will eventually satinize it. Does the DC coating wear good? or does it come off easily. Thanks again, for any and all help. as you guys can probably tell by now, this is turning out to be a harder decision than i thought...:D But really, i want to know which one you guys would prefer, and for what reasons....

The black paper is slick in hand. The micarta handles feel much more secure in hand.
I've had all three.

Dave - DC is not a coating. It is a process that takes a basically satin finish and bead blasts it to give it a "duller" finish. The bead blasting basically compresses the steel a bit at the surface creating the dull gray finish. And this finish is pretty darn durable.

And IMO, the BS protos looks way better in DC than in satin... I definitely would not pay the $75 markup some folks are asking for the satin over the DC...

Okay, yea, thanks. I knew that. I do like the DC look over the other also. Can the DC finish be polished to be satin in the future? Well, i know, but is it easy to do? or does the compressing of the steel at the surface like you say change anything with the process? and, any other opinions comparing the different versions....in terms of use?

Haven't touched a production, but the Proto's are sweet in the handle dept. That's worth a lot in my book.

Otherwise they are a mid-sized blade that is bullet-proof.

It should polish up nice to satin if you choose to do so.
I agree with UD on the DCBB finish. I've had some that were used hard and cleaned up to look like they were unused.

IME the Micarta (on the CG) makes a better user material than Paper (on the Proto).

I suggest you get a CG.

Great. Just what i was looking for! Thanks....btw, is there any difference in the handle, between the CG and Proto DC? Are they exactly the same handle? thanks again.

Hey guys. I know this thread is a little old, but finally about to make the jump. Just another question before i purchase a BS Proto DC........does the dc coating wear off with putting it in kydex sheaths. I ask, because i would like to buy a sheath for the proto from David Brown, although i can't remember where i saw the thread on if he makes a sheath for this one or not. But, if kydex wears off the coating bad, then maybe i should look into leather? Oh, and one more question. Would anyone say that the BS is too big for EDC? just want to hear your guys opinions on the matters at hand. I can't wait to get it! Im waiting on pics to purchase it. thanks
dave

It won't "wear the coating off" because there is no coating. In my experience, DC shows the least amount of anything even after hard use.

The Boss St is big for EDC.

dc is not a coating as mentioned before - it won't wear off but will smooth out, show scratches (as any bead blasted knife will)

EDC is really up to where you live, what you do. If you live in an area where carrying a knife like the BS is normal it won't be too big !!

Just buy it already - you'll like it... and if you don't !!

Bounce it !!

Great. Thanks for the pic and the kind words...That pic really looks like the BS is not too much bigger than the rest, just a little thicker of the handle. Im still waiting for a response from the guy who im trying to buy one from. Thanks, im gonna pull the plug and finally just get this one. Thanks again, for the patience. Oh, and does anyone know is David Brown makes the sheath for this dc coated one? I can't seem to find his email. thanks
