Anyone know if the 2.5 inch limit is for the sharpened edge or the entire "blade"?

I am curious if my Spyderco Native III is legal for Boston travel. The cutting edge is only 2.5 inches, although the entire "blade", including the choil, is 3.125 inches.

(I also wonder whether in general the states / municipalities that require under 3 inches measure the cutting edge or the entire "blade". Again, that would make the difference between the Native being legal or illegal.)

Good question. I just got a flyer from AKTI that suggested uniformity in knife measuring standards. I agree with that. AKTI suggested that the entie blade be measured, not just the cuting edge. That I'm not so sure i agree with. When I measure them, I measure the cutting edge. Of course I'm a LEO and a knifenut.

Personally, I think the AKTI's definition makes sense. However, being that there currently is no standard, if a particular municipality chooses to outlaw very small knives, I would hope that they would at least be lenient in interpreting it.

I have heard that in Texas, where the legal limit is 5.5 inches, someone was convicted based on a measurement that took the curvature of the blade into account. I couldn't imagine that anyone would have the nerve to do that in Boston with their 2.5 inch limit. But you never know...
