botched peening

so my friend traded me a sword for an old xbox 360 recently. The sword is a Windlass German Bastard Sword and it isnt a new to me item. we went in on the sword together a few years back and we really got into swords and armor and such. well long story short upon trading i noticed it looks like he tried to re-peen the pommel. instead of being a nice round button peen that finished off the hilt nicely it looks like someone barely warmed the metal and attacked it with brute force and no brains. the metal is now petaled out and is draped around the pommel. my question is this, how in the world do i fix it? i like this sword for the cool factor and with a spinning pommel and horrible looking peen it just gets on my nerves. any ideas would be much appreciated

If the pommel spins, take a look at this thread.

There are a few ways you could attack it but you will need some hand tools. Start by using a fresh mill file or grinder to remove the peen that you see.. Then are the alternative solutions. You can either shorten the grip or grind/file the blade shoulders making a longer tang. Ideally, the tang should key into the pommel hole but you would have to grind the shoulders or the grip to the point where the pommel can then truly engage the taper of the tang. Or bore out the base of the pommel so you can hide a nut in there and peen over just the end resulting on the nut tightening the grip.

There is also the basic bonk principle. Clamp the blade firmly. Drill a hole in a block of wood. Drive/bonk on the pommel with block and hammer. That will make it as short as it possibly can be without taking it apart. Dress and peen to your own taste.

Have fun :)
