I have had my BOTM 301 for a couple of weeks and I have waffled about complaining about the quality of the build. The Buck website claims that BOTM knives are "custom built". I wanted this knife for my 301 collection not to be a user. I have my BaldeForums 301 in my EDC rotation.

Please help me decide whether to ship the knife back to Buck.

Thanks, Brian.

Cover lifting on the mark side, see top left. You can feel the transition from bolster to cover.

A number of gaps in the springs

I wouldn't send it back if it was mine ,as long as there is no blade play im usually content. If you are not happy ,Buck will take care of you, send it in with a note describing the issues and it will be taken care of .

If on display (in a glass case, or shadow box?) where no one is going to be handling it, I don't see how the gaps would be an issue. No one is going to see them, and only you will know they are there.

For a "user" … I figure minor gaps like that (and the slightly proud or sunk backsprings you didn't mention) were common on even the most "premium" brands, back in the pre-war "Golden Age" of pocket knife manufacture, and do not affect functionality.
Again, I would not fret about those "defects" ... any more than my great or great-great grandfather would have.

Personally, I would not send it in. However, I am not you, and it is not my knife. If you're not happy with it, then by all means send it in.
You deserve to be happy, and to be as proud of that knife as is "humanly" possible. :)

gaps could get worse. wouldnt bother me so much, but if you know they are there and dislike them, they will very likely continue to bother you. send it in, would be my advice.

Thank you, Jeff. I decided a couple of days ago to send the knife in and I have prepared the Knife Repair Form. Can I mail it to your attention?

Cheers, Brian

Jeff, the knife is on its way. Many thanks.

I thought I should add some photo content to the thread - to show my appreciation for the support offered, and to show off my 301s.

I call this photo "My 301s and Cousins". There are 2 Schrade made ones, 2 Camillus made knives (a Buck and a model 200), a Buck from 2010, and a BladeForums knife on a 301 frame. The BOTM knife will get added to the family portrait one day.

UPDATE.

My knife arrived at Buck on Jan 15th and was back in my hands by Feb 10th. The covers may have been replaced but regardless they look and fit perfectly now. The gaps in the springs are darn close to nonexistent.

Thank you for assistance Jeff.

Cheers, Brian

Thanks for letting us know the outcome. Jeff H. is so good about responding and resolving issues...as are all of the Buck employees and management personnel.
