Like the title says, I picked up a $10 sheath from a maker on ebay for the Hartsook/Smidgen. Simple but it works well. Biggest gain is that it's about 1/3 smaller than the stock sheath and I can now wrap the handle as I would like since the first hole isn't part of the locking mechanism.

Something to consider for those who like those knives but don't love the issue sheath.

Ohen,

I wasnt aware of a problem with the factory sheath, Is yours an early version? Mine pulls out whithout having to unsnap or loosen like the ebay write up talks about and snaps back in good and solid. Is this something I will have to reckon with with use or do I have a newer version?

Fritz

My issue with the factory sheath is that it's very large for such a small knife. Also, I want to be able to wrap the handle and you can't do much with it since the front hole is the lock on the factory sheath.

Really just preference.

You are going to show us the wrapped sheath?
You've just about convinced me I need a Hartsook.
Will you carry as a neck knife or pocket carry?

Plan is to wrap the handle, keep the metal from cutting into my hand.

Will likely just tie the sheath off to my belt and carry it in my back pocket.

Great little knife for the price. If you're not sold on it get the Smidgen (comes with a bottle opener lanyard :-).

The factory sheath isn't bad, just too big in my mind and locks by using the forward hole which prevents wrapping the blade much.

PS - pics are not likely from me, many issues there.

Well I bought the Hartsook last night as much as anything because this sheath looks good and I might even wear the thing as a neck knife. Interested to see how I like the little guy!!

I got my Hartsook today. Thinner than I expected but a really niffty little blade.
But what do you use it for? Bear in mind I generally have a couple knifes on my person.

I basicly use the Hartsook as an unfolding pen knife. Open packages, slice a snack, cut a piece of twine, fish and small game, and lots of other cutting jobs one would use a small pocket knife for. I love the simple pocket fixed blade idea-just pull out and cut. I love the simple design that is easy to clean off; no hidden areas to collect dirt and crud. I even used it at a crab feast to pick out crab meat from little areas. It cleaned up with a wiping off with a napkin.

It will do what Buck Lancers, companions, and mini-Buck lockblades will do, without it folding up on you.

I've been carrying it for a couple of years now, and it has become part of me. I love it more now than when it was first gifted to me. It's like having a very sharp claw that comes out just when you need it.

I considered having a leather pocket sheath made for it, sort of like AG Russell's Woodswalker (another great knife!). That with a small flashlight slot on the sheath would be great and still small enough to carry in slacks.

G- it's a knife, cut stuff with it:D

Hee Hee Steve!!

I actually completely forgot to comment on the Kydex sheath for my Hartsook so here are my impressions of the teensy knife and the custom Kydex sheath.

The knife is as noted above, a super little guy perfect for little jobs that a pen knife might do for you. I personally have it my end table next to my recliner and use it to open packages, mail, and other small cutting jobs. It is pretty much a perfect knife for these things. The wife likes it too.

The sheath that came with the knife is too big and to sturdy if that makes sense. The knife the actually was required to bend to become seated in the lug lock. This new Kydex sheath is diminutive like the knife. The maker nailed the fit and the knife seats nicely. The knife and custom sheath such are such a small package that it is something I'm actually considering as a Neck Carry option. I'm thinking of a length of leather to hang it on.

Anyway, I think anyone will really like this custom sheath. If it has a negative...it is expensive for what it is but a fella just will have to decide if additional value of smaller size and greater ease of use (as compared to the old sheath).

I'll try to post some pictures of the combo later today. g
