Decided to get one of the cheap ferro rods that I'd spotted and took it out today to try it out.

In this pic you can see how much bigger it is than my Primus one which appears to be exactly the same as the Light my fire one that I had.

I fluffed up some jute and placed it with some fatwood shavings.....

Took a few strikes to get the hang of it but it worked quite well....

Snicker watched on as Maisy swam in after a stick....

She then mobbed her for it when she got back !!!!

The mountains looked cool today....

I like the pics of the mountains in the distance. Very cool.

Each ferro rod I try always has something new about it, even the same ones. The striking required is different on almost each one I have used. Never could figure out why.

Great pics, the mountains look awesome, where did you get it and how much is cheaper?

It was from a local store called capital Iron and cost me $7.99, the LMF one is about $13 from the same store.

I got one of those rods at Canadian Tire. I can't remember the purchase price, though.
The supplied striker is worthless, unless it's fixed up a little. Other than that..., it works just fine.

Yeah I had to use the supplied striker end on, I think there is maybe too much flex in it otherwise.

I should check Crappy tire out more than I do, problem is once I'm in there the wife can't get me back out !!!:D

they also sell one with a handle in the shape of a eagle's head. its the same thickness as the army light my fire firesteels and strikes quite nicely. comes with a couple sticks of fat wood as well :D

they sell i primus one at mec that looks the same as that north 49 one that i just may try now

A friend of mine just bought a firesteel on-line. It was marketed as being an LMF firesteel but looks just like that one with no writing on it. It throws sparks just like an LMF so I thought maybe it was a surplus issue one...now I don't know. It works good, and as I told him, that's really all that matters...right?

I think Primus comes in the same sizes as the LMF brand and works much the same, as well. I believe the physical size of the North 49 is different from those before-mentioned two.

I got a new one from Going Gear today. A 4 inch x 3/8 and three more of those super strikers from them too. I am sold on those strikers.

:o I just got an order from Going Gear and forgot the strikers.
I guess it gives me a reason to order again.
Those 1/2" steels are incredible.
