So today I bought a gps very cheap , it's a Magellan triton 400 , it was so cheap as it's an older model . Does the age matter much ?

I still use my old eTrek that doesn't even show a map. I use it to guide me back when I'm out 'strolling' or to mark treestand locations. The key is to play with it until you learn how to use it and you are confident in it's accuracy.

Is the charging port also a USB port? When I plug my old Magellan Roadmate into a computer connected to the net it downloads free software updates.

Yes the charger does connect to USB port and there's a cd in the box to install a program on a computer. I found it's new old stock from 2007 , might be alright . I only paid $130 Aussie dollars for it. The latest ones are between $150 and $600 plus

I got a Magellan 350 from 1999. It still works no maps it just set up a point and an arrow. I done backpacking with it and even went geocaching a few months ago just kicks. I do like to have the map and the new GPS would receive satellite faster. But if you stop for about a min with the old one it would get them just as good. It would guide me to the same location just as close when compare the garmin 60cx to the old Magellan.
Bottom line is that its nice to have maps its nice to have a GPS that would get reading within seconds. But the old ones work just as well. If I wanted a basic and cheaper GPS an old one in good shape is a great buy. Enjoy it and if you want to learn more about it and how to use it. Check out a Geocaching.com You would learn a lot about it just from using it. You would also learn what are its limitation and where it shines.
