Went to visit my in-laws in Cincinnati, Ohio. Yes, they like me. Good thing. They live in the village of Cleves just outside the city.

They have a wonderful old-fashioned hardware store called "Merrilees Hardware Co," the likes of which is rare these days. On impulse, I walked in and looked at their pocketknife display case. They had a Schrade Old Timer 108OT Junior and 8OT Senior. Couldn't resist. Bought both of them. Best thing was, they rang up less expensively than their display tags read.

I usually buy my pocketknives on the Web because it's cheaper than retail markup. Not at Merrilees. The price was more than right.

Come to think of it, I never see displays of pocketknives other than Swiss Army Knives any more. That's a shame.

One of my fondest memories is looking at the pocket knives in our local hardware stores back in the 60's. The models were all made in the U.S. or England. Both the local hardware store and the displays seem to have become extinct. A shame

There's a great song by a guy named David Wilcox called "East Asheville Hardware" that is all about the joys of the little hardware store and the sadness of its imminent demise. I'm lucky in that a small hardware store is just down the street from me. You can go in and buy one screw for a nickel (instead of a 50 pack), and the service is always helpful and friendly. I give them my business whenever possible.

That said, most Lowe's stores do still have the knife displays up near the hand tools. There are always some Shrades in there. But it just ain't the same as the mom and pop hardware store.
