Bought a new Calypso Jr Lightweight....at school!

Today, I bought the first new knife I have gotten in quite a while.

There are occasionally vendors set up like a bazaar at my University. Usually all I buy from the bazaar are some CD's, and most everything else is garbage, IMO. So, I was walking from Structural Biochem to MamPhys2 and saw a bunch of Benchmades and Spydercos on display on the side of the Quad! I had to stop.
There were some guys talking knives, seeming quite well informed. I was impressed! These guys (students/customers) could really talk knives on a serious level. The vendor is a nice guy, and tells us that "every other guy that comes by whips out a knife to show him", so apparently I am not the only one carrying a knife on campus (which is, according to State law, legal since it is a folder, but not many people know that, including the Police). Eventually, one of the customers pulls out a Double Action Microtech Tanto! (Yes, an Auto on a California University Campus!). Very knice! So, of course I had to show off my daily carry: the Benchmade M2 PROTOTYPE (as seen in my review at Northwest Cutlery, hammered through a car hood).
So, of course I HAD to support this guy (his business is called "Ice Knives") for the mere fact that he is selling premium folders on my campus. I like that political incorrectness.
I looked around his little shop and saw a Calypso Jr! Cool, I have wanted one of those ever since my buddies here on the forums started raving about the first ones many many moons ago. I asked to see it. It is the new style. Very cool! Fish scale pattern, VG-10, offered in plain edge or serrated (plain edge...of course), reversable pocket clip, feels great in the hand, perfect 3 inch total blade length so I can carry it anywhere, and best of all: FLAT GROUND. What a wicked sharp knife!

I had to buy it, and I had to support this guy, so I whipped out the credit card...

I am going to carry this one as my Lefty, to use every day for small chores and compliment my M2 AFCK.

I like this knife! I especially like that I bought it on campus...for $49.

What a small world ehh?

I wanted to see if he had any MA LCC's in stock, and wanted to hear his interpretation on knife laws in Ca. Unfortunately, he didn't have any in stock, and I didn't agree to much with what he said about the laws either.

Interesting, I wish I could even carry a knife in my school (High School).

thaddeus,

Sounds like there are a few San Diego
forum members (myself included), so...

Can you clarify what the existing knife laws
are at UCSD?

It was my understanding that folders with
lockable blades were banned from UC campuses.
Not true?

Folders in CA are for the most part legal.
However, local laws may differ. Schools
(UC included), airports and courts have
their own stipulations. I travel through
UCSD quite often. It would be nice to know
what the UC police's take is on these
edged tools.

Thanks,

Mark

Hey Quijebo,

I was about to ask if you were a forumite. Anyone that knows knives on the level you were talking is obviously a forumite.

His interpretations of the law were good on the ears (you will only get in trouble if you get caught in a fight) but probably not realistic. I did not pay attention to everything he was saying, because I just wanted to look at my future new knife.

In my extensive but amateur study of California law, there is a clause that allows folders (even lockable) on University campuses. Fixed blades are illegal. That is State law. You have to read it carefully, but it is there.

The campus actually has a no weapons policy, so I called the Police and asked them. They put me through to a Lt. Detective who told me that NO KNIVES are allowed on campus, so I challenged him with the State law. He said that it was University policy. So I asked "well, what about a knife in my lunch box to cut my sandwich....or a knife in my art box to sharpen my pencils....or a knife in my bicycle repair kit...?" He grew frustrated and said that it would be "up to the discretion of the Officer on scene to decide if it is a weapon or a tool".
Not a lot of help, but I carry my knife and I use it as tool. According to law, I am okay; according to technicalities of the University policy, I am okay; but according to some hoplophobes I am in violation of the "no weapons" policy. They can kiss my ass and I will see them in court if needed, because the law is on my side. (Although I prefer to just remain discrete and it won't be an issue).

My university here in NC dosn't allow knives either...dosn't stop me though...I carry a swiss army knife, a CRKT Kasper/Crawford (large one) and a gerber multitool every day...haven't be harassed by any cops yet...Just be really discret and you'll be left alone...If someone did give me a hard time about it, I would simply explain that knives are tools...not weapons...

CA State Penal Code 626.10 sect. B states that at all CSU & UC campuses, no fixed blades larger than 2.5" are allowed (except for food preparation & law enforcement). That's all you'll find in state law regarding universities. Check your city/county laws and official university rules. I'm a student at SFSU and found that I can carry any manual folder under 5". University police did not know school rules or state laws. Do the homework yourself to make sure you know what your school rules are; if your school's like mine there's probably no one on campus who really knows them, so asking people, including the police, might not help you.

I wish they sold knives at my school! It is really suprising that carring knives on campus is not illegeal, I think it is a great idea!

THANKS!!!
