Ok, I'm just bragging...I bought two knives today...yipeeeee! I am very happy with both purchases.

I got a Buck Nighthawk. I'm a newbie so maybe I don't know but it seems like a lot of knife for $66 (Bond's Cutlery).

I also lucked out (BIG brag here) in getting a Cuda CQB2 for $70 (at "The Gun Store"). If any of you happen to be in Las Vegas hurry over there and get one. They have four left!

Uhhh... I'm sure you don't want to hear this, but retail price for the Nighthawk is commonly $40 - $45. And it ~is~ a lot of knife for the money. I love both of mine!

You got a good deal on the CUDA, so you at least came out even.

Yeah, Bob, that doesn't hurt my feelings too much. I have seen the Nighthawk for $56 on the net (haven't seen it for $40) but, you know, support the local knife shop and all that. I don't feel like I got burned too badly on it. If I had bought the Gerber Yari for $140, then I would have really been burned. The Nighthawk for $40 would be an incredible value for sure. I wasn't bragging on the price for the Nighthawk, just making a point that it is a relatively inexpensive knife, good buy and I am happy to own it.

Yep, sometimes it's worth paying a little extra to handle the knives in person before buying. Plus, add shipping to the internet prices and you're not too far off anyway.

For future reference, Smoky Mountain Knife Works ( www.eknifeworks.com ) has the Nighthawk for $44. AG Russell has 'em for $50. Knifeworks ( www.knifeworks.com ) has the lowest price I've seen lately, $42.

My two First Production Nighthawks with display stands were $40 - $45, but that was several years ago.

I'm not real familiar with the different CUDA models, but briefly searching for the model number of your's, it seems you bought a hard-to-find item at a very good price.

Being a "bargain shopper" helps justify having so many knives. :)

Best Wishes,
Bob

Right you are Bob, in fact, the more knives I buy the more money I SAVE!!! What a great way to save money. I going to buy all the knives I can ;)

I also have a Nighthawk (black blade/black handle, plain-edge, clip-point), and I also have the "big brother" to the CQB-2, the CQB-1...Both the knives you bought today are excellent knives, (eventho' the steel of the Nighthawk COULD be alittle better, such as 440C, AUS-8A, or 154CM)...

Thanks glockman, its nice to know that i chose well on my first two purchases. Buyer's remorse is a terrible thing!

What is the steel on the nighthawk?
When was it first made?
I've always liked the nighthawk since it came out years ago.

The steel is 420HC, or so it says in the catalog that i have. Don't know when they first made it.

My black coated and bead blasted first productions are dated 3/95, these are possibly the earliest models but I'm not positive. It seems some of the other variations haven't been around as long - the mini-Nighthawks, the green handles, and the semi-serrated for instance.

The steel on these earlier knives is advertised "425 modified carbon steel." The newer ones may be different.

Best Wishes,
Bob

The Nighthawk was originally designed to win the trials for testing as a Navy SEAL knife.
It's certainly tough enough.

The CQB was designed by Rob Terzoula and is one of my favorite production blades. I love the larger model and am really coming to appreciate its little brother. Especially how easy it is to carry, I used to have panic checks where I thought I must have dropped it. ITs small and light enough to lose on your person quite easily.

So, for a NewB you patronize a local knife store, get two awesome blades for around a hundred bucks and will never have to look back in regret.
Nicely done!

It only gets mpore expensive from there!
