Bought a SS Kobun - should I bring it back?

Hello,

Having read a lot and asked a few questions, I am under the impression that CS 420 sub-zero quenched stainless is quite crappy. I am not about to test my Kobun out, as then I wouldn't be able to trade the knife back for a better one if necessary.

Has anyone actually used a Cold Steel 420 cryo knife? Was it any good? Should I trade my 420 Kobun back for a CarbonV Kobun or a Master Hunter in AUS 8a or CarbonV? What would you do? The upgrade from the SS Kobun is ~US$35.00 up here.

I am not poor, but I have plans to purchase a Spydie Wegner soon. If the Kobun in 420 is substandard then perhaps I should upgrade it and put off the Wegner until later.

What would you do?

Thanks,
Phil

I have also heard really bad things about cs 420. Trade it in for the trail master.

Also get over to the excange board for that wegner for $83 bucks

I have owned a CS Kobun in 420. Knife design i liked, steel i didnt, so i sold it off. Its about as good as your average 420 steel, its not as good as the 420HC that buck uses i can tell you that. It held a edge about as well as my Aus 6 CRKT M-16. It was also prone to edge rolling, probably due to a low RC.

If you want to use the Kobun for self defense purposes, then the used blade steel is of secondary relevance in my opinion. Edge holding is not an important aspect of a fighting knife (which the Kobun certainly is). And with the Spyderco Wegner you will get a good utility knife.

The reason bought the Kobun was not because it was a 'fighting knife', but because it was a FB that I could clip to my waist without having to wear a belt all the time.

Perhaps the Tanto style blade is not as useful for a general purpose knife? I thought I would give it a whirl since the recon Tanto seems so popular.

I am starting to think I should either upgrade it to a CarbonV Kobun or exchange it for a Sharpmaker 204.

Thanks everyone,

I just went out and exchanged the knife for a Spyderco Sharpmaker 204.

Better to have a good way to keep my existing knives sharp than own sub-par steel!

:D
