I was so enamored with the Flash II I received that I went out to my local knive pusher and purchased an Auto-Clip BG-42. This is one sweet knife. A little stiff, but I think with usage, will loosen up a bit. Blade is one of the sharpest out of the box I have ever seen. Still want a Trident folder tho. With birthday and Christmas coming up, maybe, just maybe some family member will get the hint. If not, guess I will have to do it myself.

Looks like you have been bit by the sog bug :) Just a warning, you will NEVER get better, but then again, who wants too.:D

Very nice knife, I have one of those in TINI finish. It too was a little tight, loosened up after a few days of opening and closing. Blade was and still is razor sharp, I just look at and admire mine. The BG-42 blades will no longer be made according to SOG, so whats left for sale is it the way I understand it.

From what I understand, the BG-42 steel keeps an edge better and looks nicer longer. Don't know a lot about the different steels used, but even at this late date, never too late to learn.

It is a very good.......HARD, ball bearing type steel according to SOG..... Made from ball bearings out of UFOs landing gear............ I just had to throw in a little joke tonight......... :D

Please forgive me........sometimes I just have to let loose a little..... :D The truth is this, it really is great steel I hear, I have cut only paper and wood with mine so I would say I have not gave it a work out. But mine is so purty I hate to scar it up, and I have heard others say it is great steel and hardly ever needs sharpening.

From what Chris at SOG says, they are slowly phasing out the BG-42 steel, so you are lucky, most places I have checked are already sold out, and then there will be no more :(

based on my limited experience with BG-42, you're gonna hate it when you try to sharpen it. But once you have it sharpened, you'll never want to get rid of it. The edge of that hard hard steel can be made incredibly sharp.

here's a post from a while back in the SOG Forum as regards what might be expected of BG-42 in terms of "sharp." My pal Tim had my Field Knife (with BG-42 steel) to mess around with:

I have been "playing" with it here. I noted that the edge had been ground, with numerous striations from the wheel. The edge appeared to have been stropped, probably on a wheel also. I stropped it on my desk pad (paper is a great polishing material at this level) and it actually enhanced the edge to the point that I could cut off my finger prints. Literally cutting the tops of the little ridges without cutting the flesh beneath. That is pretty sharp! Not quite electro........ But well beyond razor blade. Interesting stuff.

Cheers,

Carl

since I sharpen all of my knives, I will definitely take your advice into consideration. A bit of sweat seems to be in order here, but from what you say, well worth the effort.

Your BG-42 blade should be hair splitting sharp right now........ :D Mine is still this way even after cutting lots of paper and stuff.

I just found another BG-42 sharpening thread.....

if you're interested in the metallurgical info:
http://www.timken.com/products/spec...fo/PDF_Files/vac_arc/Bearing/BG42_Bearing.pdf

and some other info from a source I don't recall:
"Bob Loveless announced recently that he's switching from ATS-34 to this steel. Keep an eye out for it, it's bound to catch on. BG-42 is somewhat similar to ATS-34, with two major differences: It has twice as much manganese as ATS-34, and has 1.2% vanadium (ATS-34 has no vanadium), so look for even better edge-holding than ATS-34. Chris Reeves has switched from ATS-34 to BG-42 in his Sebenzas."

Cheers,

Carl

Don't do it......... :D shine them and put em up......... :p

Carl uses ALL his SOGs......... :grumpy:

He even slices meat with his, we have proof of this somewhere........

I keep mine nice and shiny, put up for a rainy day......

Gosh ! man your on the ball, I knew we had proof, but figured I could never find it, thanks. :)

sitting down to dinner at one of my kids home, and pulling out my 42 or Flash to cut my steak. We'd be calling 9-1-1 for certain-mass heart attacks all around the table. Now I have used the Flash to divide a Chicken Sandwich for the wife and I. Does that count? :) :)

Ah, Sweet Sweet Tales of Tactical Tableware !!!!!! truly the best...... nothing starts fine dinner conversation like SOG Tactical Tableware !!

in late JAN 2004 several of us got together for a manly gathering we called PRWWWC .... Prime Rib, Wine, Whiskey, Weapons, Cigars .....
SOG's were laid out aplenty..... the Tigershark did the prime rib carving chores..... other SOG's got a workout as dinner knives.
A fine evening !!!

Cheers,

Carl
