I bought the whole set and they all had what i would describe as uneven spray (i know its not paint but its the best way i can describe how it looks.) But the coarse stone had the biggest "imperfections" is this just cosmetic or will it affect function? Should I return it? Thanks for any help or advise.

What i am describing is in the upper right hand of the pics. It looks as shown in the pics, no faults with the flash.

interesting...i bought the c, f, xf, xxf as well last week and only the coarse stone has this 1" triangle area in one of the corners that doesn't seem to have any diamond to it. or it feels so smooth it's more like xf than coarse. still haven't decided whether to contact dmt since i started using it anyway.

Your stones have a warranty, it doesn't matter if you have used them.

jimmybjj, Your stone looks normal to me. I think what your seeing is excess diamond build-up at the edge, this will wear away during break-in.

DMT stones go through a lot of changes just always use light pressure and sharpen evenly on the stone. You can also rub the stones together to speed up the initial break-in. I would only do F with EF and EF with EEF, the Coarse might be too much for the Fine. The coarse stones break-in faster so its not really worth the time to speed them up. You could flatten a waterstone and that would probably do it.

The way they look, feel, sound, and work will all change with time and for the better

I actually picked up a set of 8" dia-sharps weekend before last, and found problems with 3/4. this doesn't seem to be a common occurrence. perhaps we just have poor luck!

Most of mine have that inconsistency as well, and on my EEF there is no coating around the edges. it is reflective, as the underside, and feels smooth (no abrasive), so there's no coating whatsoever on those margins.

I contacted them first thing last monday, and only received a response on friday after i sent an email asking why i was not given response. i'm still waiting to see what they're going to do with it.

Have you sharpened a knife to see if the diamonds are not actually their? I ask because my EEF looks the same way and works fine, your not going to see 3 micron diamonds like you "see" diamonds on the other stones.

What sort of problems did you find with the stones?

I found out while trying to restore an ebay straight razor. was a good test actually, because i was trying to see if i could set the bevel on the 8k dmt, and what with the repeated flat movement with straights, it eliminated human error from it. got a hair-popping bevel on the dmt everywhere but the heel the aprox width of the smooth and shiny part of the stone.

otherwise nothing more than we've talked about on email.

I had a similar issue with a dia-fold I purchased last month. I bought a coarse/fine and EF/EEF diafold. I had my edge like a razor, then switched to the EEF and bam, I hit something on the surface that could only be described as an Extra Coarse diamond grit or something. Mucked up my edge. :grumpy: You could actually feel the grit embedded in the surface with your finger. Figuring it was unusable in that condition anyway, I took my fine diafold and rubbed the surface of the EEF one. I think it took most of the grit away, but you can still feel the edge catching on little uneven spots every now and then. Looking at the edge afterward, you can definitely see a deformation in the edge where it hit. Can I send that back for replacement? I also have some 6x2" dual sided continuous stones on order from knifecenter, so I'm hoping they don't have the same problem. Sucks getting to the EFF stage only to muck the edge up on a defective EFF stone. :grumpy:

Dnullify, didn't realize it was you :)
No contact on the edges might be from the rest of the stone needing to break-in.

Most "problems" I think you guys are seeing are just because the stones are new. They really do go through a lot of changes as they break-in.

The large grit on the EEF stone seems strange but again if not fully broke-in things like that can happen. A EEF stone will feel like glass and have a shiny surface once broke-in.

I had all these same questions and "issues" when I got my plates too, trust me things will change a lot with the plates but you must use them.

Well, it sure sucks to work hard on an edge, only to muck it up on the finishing stone. I thought these things were certified to be no coarser than the grit they claim. Having two rough spots on the EFF stone mess up an edge is not something I expect to experience as a break-in issue. I sure hope my new 6" stones don't come this way. I like the diafolds for their portability, but don't really care for the non-continuous surface. Not really noticeable on the grits below EF and EEF, but you can definitely feel the edge not running smoothly over the surface because of the 'holes' of plastic. BTW, the EEF stone is the 8" one, because it doesn't come in the smaller sizes. I got the smaller size 6" ones because, like the dia-folds, they have different grits on each side, which means less weight to pack when I go back home from this hell hole Afghanisand.

I've had some random scratches like that in the beginning but I don't think to the extent you described. I'd contact DMT about replacement.

I hope the rest of your DMT experience is as good as mine has been, with all the DMT stuff I have and the many I know that use them this is definitely not typical.

That's what I'm hoping... I just wonder if they'd replace my dia-fold after I've used it, and even tried smoothing it by rubbing my other dia-fold on it to break down the rough spots. It looks a bit scratched up as a result.:grumpy:

I don't think it would be a issue, just tell them where its been.

Remember for next time that rubbing the F with the EEF is a no no.

I assume you're saying that because Fine is so much coarser than the EFF, and will damage it? That was my thinking as well, unfortunately, the EF stones were on the back of the EFF diafold, so I couldn't use it.
