Will an acetylene regulator work? I heard that they will screw directly into an LP propane tank. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The short answer is i don't know. But I have a safety story.

If you contact your local gas supplier Im sure he would have all the info on hand. I looked up the local gas supplier went in he had a huge shop full of goodies. I got a gas regulator with presure gauge for $87 australian. I would expect you guys with the dollar worth almost 2 of ours would be even better off.
Just my way is if I can have 2 regulators so I don't have to swap and change that is the way I like it.
One reason is a mate almost got us blown up with a leaking seal.

We were forging a while thought we smeled gas but like idiots did not test the seals. Then to make it worse he started grinding with an angle grinder and sprayed sparks onto the top of the cylender.

First I ran over and tried to put it out buy grabing/smothering the flame at the seal didn't work. At the same time turning of the main cylender tap. Turning of the tap obviously worked, Im writting this letter. My wife is still geting the skid marks out of my pants.

The trouble with lpg aswell is it is heavy if the shop had not been well ventilated the gas could have formed a pocket of gas which all went up at once.

JUst another side track for safety. I worked in the water authority.
A guy was working in a trench/hole the gas pooled in the bottom he did not light up but the gas killed him by sufocation.

You can also die in a back yard bore well if the mefaine gas rises from the water table. Saw 3 big italian guys on a market garden do that each went to help the previous and got into trouble.
Luckily the 4th got help. only one died the others were very sick and would have if 4 was not there.

Don't let me put you off just be carefull.

Very good advice, but a acetylene gauge will work and a redhead valve for propane is better. If you use the acetylene valve, have it checked out first.

Give Jay Hayes an email at:

xmas4lites@earthlink.net

He carries the redhead regulators for arounf $25.00 and the POL tailpiece for about $4.00. He'a a good guy to deal with and carries a ton of other forge building supplies including several grades of ceramic fiber insulation and ITC-100 and he even has forge kits. He'll email you a list of all the supplies he carries
(like needle valves, shut offs, hoses, etc.) if you ask him.

Or try here:

www.cajunshoppe.com

They carry a lot of propane supplies for cookers and such. But they do carry hoses, needle valves, regulators and shut offs.

Centaur forge (www.centaurforge.com) used to carry 0-20 psi Fisher redheads for a good price, that's where I got mine a couple of years ago.

Hope this helps some!

I'd get a gauge also, sure makes it nice to know what pressure you are running and helps you save gas. I always was burning more gas than needed until I got the guage for mine, sure takes away alot of the guess work. I guess......Ray

Thank you all for the great advice and links! I new that someone would come through. I really can't wait to start forging! It's happening way too slow, but better safe than sorry after reading the reply from down under. You guys and this forum are a great resource!!

Thanks again,
Rick
