I’m having a heck of a time openingusing the thumb stud. It’s one of the DLT non flipper XM-18s that’s fullered and it seems like I can’t get the hang of how to flick it open with my thumb unlike every other knife I own. Are there any tricks to doing this? Seems like maybe I’m pushing on the lock while holding the knife but still my thumb is getting sore!

Yes, you are probably pushing on the lock bar. Try to adjust your grip, it should do the trick.

Your Hinderer is brand new. The detent is going to be very stiff initially and will loosen up after a few hundred cycles.

Hinderers in my experience are not too bad out of the box and the action lightens up pretty quickly. Shiro’s on the other hand start out with a crazy “firm” detent. Once they loosen up a little…….perfection 👍🏻

The pivot tension may be too tight. Try loosening the pivot a bit and see if that helps.
Do you know if it’s running the bearings or washers ?

I think it's your technique, I also had a lot of trouble learning how to thumb flick at first. For me, it's much easier to middle finger flick, and that's what I did for a very long time, then I decided to practice thumb flick, it took quite some time and a very sore thumb but get I eventually get the angle and pressure right. I suggest keep practicing, try adjusting the angle and pressure
