I just bought my first Khukri, a 12 inch 12 ounce Ang Khola with horn handles. The maker is "Sher".

I have been wanting to buy a Khukri for a while and realise that most think a 12 inch is a little short for a Khukri, but it was a steal (50$) ! Now will i be please by it? The purpose i wan't it for, is as a sturdy all round user, I don't wan't it to be able to chop down large trees, but i need a sturdy camp knife that i can use to chop branches, field dressing, food preparation and it should be able to save my hide when confronted with "human" predators. Do you guys think i got a good deal from it?

I know you did, use it with respect and treat it with care, and I guarantee it'll still give good service when you give it to your grandkids.

BTW, welcome to the Cantina Mongo.:D

Welcome Mongo-Man:)

YES! You got a fantastic deal on that AK. I had mulled it over getting it myself. They are great "little" knives, and Sher does some wonderful work. I think it will work out nicely for a camp knife. It'll chop wood up to 3" pretty easily with good form. It's also tough enough to batton through bigger logs if need be. You got yourself a lot of knife for 50 bucks. Congrats and enjoy.

Oh, and read the safety thread twice....there will be a test:p

Congrats and I'm sorry;) :D

Congrats on the knife, and I'm sorry to tell you that your bank account is now toast;) :D Oh yes, you may think you'll buy just one, but trust me you WILL buy more.

You NEED to get an 18"er, and a 20, and a 15 ,and a 16.5 and...oh and then there are all the style variation, each slightly better at one thing than the other, then all the handle variations within each style, then special runs, then,.then, then..

Ahh, much better. Never mind all that, I'm sure you'll enjoy that one khuk and never need another:rolleyes: ;)

It should serve you well. Excellent first purchase. Enjoy, and welcome.

The 12" AK should serve you well for what you have in mind. Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the Cantina. You must realize that you will be overtaken by HIKV sooner or later. My first was a 18" Gelbu Special, but since then some 18 other HI blades have come to live with me including two 12" AK's.

My first was a Chiruwa AK by Kumar. I then had to order a 12" knife to fit in my bug out bag. Got a Bura Badune Special. Both great. You'll love Khuks. I had never seen a blade so thick. I recently pried a board from a picnic table with my AK!!! It can take all my weight (185 lbs) without deforming. The board gave before the blade. My wife thinks I'm nuts though.

You'll love it my first khukuri was a 12" AK with a horn handle recommended to me by Uncle Bill. Use it quite often and think of him fondly when I do.

Before anybody gets on James' case about double posting, be advised, I didn't mind a bit reading that one twice. I miss him too James.

You got a good deal and will love the khukuri- so much, in fact, it will soon have company. There's simple truth in the design of the khukuri... Genius. You'llllllll seeeee......

Bienvenido, Mongo.

I hate to be a nay-sayer Mongo Man but you made a terrible first purchase. You will find the little K won't be long enough, heavy enough, strong enough for what you have in mind. You'll find you will need other K's for that.

Sooooo, I suggest you send the worthless little K to me and I will take care of it for you. Just email me and I will send you my address. I might even pay for shipping even though the K you bought is practically worthless. And yes I know I am too kind hearted but that is the way I am. Just want to help out a new guy.
