A Gerber Icon. Love the knife and I already know I could have bought better for $60, but I have plenty of Gerbers that work great so I hope this doesn't turn into a Gerber bashing thread. My question is about the Tanto blade itself. Does anyone EDC a tanto? Have you ever thought about what if your stuck with just your tanto. Different blades are designed for different purpose, but I've never put a tanto to work. Not my first choice to skin a deer, but I can make it work. What do you use your tanto for? Do you believe you can use it for the same purposes as a drop point or other? Thanks for your time.

I carried a Gerber tanto for about 2.5 years. Loved it. I found it incredibly useful. I mostly used it for EDC tasks but I found that I use piercing cuts more than I realized so the point came in handy. The primary strait edge works well as a wharncliffe which is quite useful also. I wasn't very good at sharpening back then, so I won't comment on how easy or hard that is. Enjoy it. I'm thinking about getting another tanto.

I have a few CS Tanto's I've used to skin every thing from Fish & Fowl to Deer & a few Hogs.
The point has also been used many times as a scrapper for gaskets on engine block ect.
The only limits on the uses for a quality Tanto are the limits of your Imagination.
Contrary to Urban Myth the the American tanto tip shape while very strong really sucks at stabbing.

I like Tantos! Tantos can be useful, specially for scraping and cleaning flat surfaces. Im able to control some cuts better with a tanto, the strait edge doesnt repel or move material up or down. Gerber... interesting :D

I edc'd a recurved tanto for 4 yrs. Loved it! I used it for everything from cutting food on the job or in the woods to opening packages to cutting hose to scraping labels and stubborn materials.

I edc a cs large tanto and I work in a wood shop. I use it for a quick chisel If I'm in a pinch which happens to be a lot:-)
