I think reading this forum may have converted me. I've been using modern design pocket knives all along, but I found this subforum interesting to read. Not long ago I spotted a thread on the Case sway back jack, which I think is a new(ish) pattern for them? Anyway, it looked so outstanding I had to get one, and now that it's arrived I'm thrilled to own it. The CV steel really does take a good edge and the bone handles are just pretty. I had thought to just have it as a sort of collectable, but it feels good in the pocket so that's where it's going. So the only problem now is I'm curious about other knives. Want to try a stockman.. and a trapper maybe. One question though.. is it acceptable to let the carbon steel blades darken as they will? I rather like the look of the older knives, but I don't want to neglect it if it's bad for the blade.

That's the one with the Wharncliffe blade, right? I just got one too, and I really like it. Its a definite "user", too good to leave it in the drawer.

A lot of slip-joint fans seem to gravitate to a favorite pattern (mine is the large Trapper) but most of us to have a little variety too. The Trapper and Stockman are probably two of the most popular patterns but don't let popularity influcene you. Just pick out the knives that appeal to you.

Oh, yeah! That's called patina and a lot of people prefer the look of the blade once it has developed that darker look. As long as you don't let it actually rust, the patina won't do any harm to the blade.

Welcome to the club. You will find your collection growing and growing. Don't fight it. Just let it happen naturally.

We have been waiting for you.....Welcome....I got my sway back 2 weeks ago, and am thrilled with it. I really like CV steel. To answer your question, I like it shiny and new, but some like it with patina. Your choice, your knife, no arguments here. You will most likely explore many more patterns. Have fun! Traditional is a great forum.

Welcome.
As others have mentioned, its up to you about letting the blades patina.
Heck some people even go out of their way to make it happen faster...

I like em both ways, just depends on the knife..

Doesn't matter if you have one knife or one hundred, the folks here treat everyone the same.. Great folks hang out here in this little s/f

Once you decide what you really like you can kiss your bank account good bye! Listen to these guys they know their stuff!
