Greetings you all :)

For the past week I have been mostly carrying my Opinel 6.
Just the strangest thing: I have $ 100+ knives in my collection and I EDC a simple EUR 8.30 knife.
However, the handle was just a tad too smallisch for my hand, so today I went to the only hardware store my town has and bought myself a no. 7.
The Opinel is the only traditional I can buy over here for a reasonable price.
I was eying a Buck 112 as well but at EUR 73 (about $100) I found it a bit too steep:grumpy:
Furthermore there are no Cases, Queens or others you can buy over here.

And man, I love this simple French knife more and more.
The no. 7 fits perfectly and after fooling around with tissues drenched in vinegar for better half of the afternoon it has a nice patina already.

It's evening over here so I'll post a pic tomorrow in day light.

Just wanted to share my entousiasm with you all ;)

Opinels are nice in all their simplicity, no frills. I've been (lazily) working on modifying a No. 12 for my own amusement. Yours is a little more pocketable. :)

I need to get Carbon Opinel, too bad they sale mostly stainless version in here. Luckily we have eBay and there's nice outdoorshop in Germany selling Opinel's in cheap price ( was #8 around 8,40-8,60€ ) and postal feed's 1,5€'s in EU area. Its still cheaper than buying Opinel's in Finland. With price you pay in regular Opinel #8 stainless with shipping, you almost get two Opinel's from eBay delivered to you..

Opinel is purest form of simplicity that works.

I finally picked up a #9 just to see what all the fuss is about. It came pretty sharp and for the price I guess they are worth having. I just can't get past the fact that it looks like a kids High School shop project. Mine went in my tackle bag.

Arend, after seeing a picture of your hands one time I can understand you needing the larger number 7.

With that carbon steel, really thin blade it sure can get really sharp very easily eh? I really like these knives a lot. The only problem I've ever had is one tended to swell up with moisture to the point I'd need pliers to open it. It's the only one I've had that did it.

The walnut ones with 12C27 stainless steel are pretty nice too. They take an edge almost as easily as the carbon steel models. Regards, joe/Raleigh

To prevent food for swelling up due moisture you should treat the wood handle with food grade mineral oil or paraffin oil, so the wood would take the oil and prevent water getting into wood and cause swelling up.

Yup Joe, I got the blade scary sharp with the brown stone of my sharpmaker and a leather belt for stroping.
Freehand(I got a lot to learn though :o )
Pic will take some time because I'm at my girlfriend's right now and forgot the uploading wire(don't know the English name for it :o) of my mobile phone. :grumpy:

I know what you mean. I got to a point in my knife collecting where I found myself using Opinels, Sodbusters, and and such instead of more expencive knives.

I ended up selling off my collection.
