Went knife hunting the other day! First time in awhile, so I was gonna go all out (for me at least.) So, I set about a $55 ceiling and set out for a nice tactical or maybe a decent looking multitool. I am aware that you can get very good prices on the internet, but there is something about seeing the knife in person before I buy it. Its like test driving a car, for most people, you can't just look at it on the internet and say, "I want that 2010 mustang gt because its silver!!"

Well anyways, I went looking around in some of the more obvious places for decent knives, like Lowes, Home Depot, Target, and of course the Wally World. I was originally gonna just replace my Vic Supertinker that was accidentally misplaced at work, but figured I'd go with something new. Lowes had Case sodbusters, SOG Twitch 2 and a SOG multitool, I have handles the Kobalt Multitool/Partially serrated folder combo and its not terrible at a measly $18 + 10% employee discount (gotta love friends), but I wasn't satisfied with that this time with a decent budget.

Next place of choice was Walmart!!! (after seeing home depot and target had nothing), went to the sporting good section and looked at 3 particular knives. Kershaw od-1, Kershaw Skyline, and the Buck Omni hunter, but also handled gerber fast draw 3.0 and the winchester auto assist. Initial thoughts on those were cheap plastic handles, screws that held the pocket clip were loose, and the winchester seemed to be duller than past experiences.

Skyline, didn't like the fact that left hand opening was little hard due to the durn pocket clip being in the way, and im not completely sure that it could be changed and turned around, but who knows.

omni hunter, the handles were a rubberized nylon feeling, but solid lock up and love the blade design, I like some belly in my blades, but i don't like the little tail it has and the ballistic nylon case seems a little cheap and ive had bad experiences with a lot of cases ripping due to me always catching them on something.

and the od-1, well i was super impressed with this little puppy. good steel, excellent lock up, opens super fast after you play with it for a minute, sharp out of the box, tip up carry, but i dont like that the pocket clip shows 30% of the knife, but oh well, this little puppy made it into my pocket and went home with me!, but @ a ~$40 price tag, i feel like its not enough knife. I am a fairly traditional person with the only tactical roots being S&W spec ops knives in g10 with hammer forged surgical stainless. (awesome knife btw, it can take a BEATING)

I like my knives on the heavier side and at 3.4 ounces, this knife isn't very heavy AT ALL! and with my edc being a leatherman juice s2 for work or maybe a buck 110 on my belt, im use to a heavier knife. The juice is about as light as i got at ~4.4 ounces, unless i was running a traditional knife, but those still run heavier due to three blades in the knife. I am debating on taking it back possibly for a heavier knife, but im really satisfied with the od-1.

if I could find a custom fixed blade around 3 1/2 to 4-ish inches long, just a little utility knife, i'd be in heaven, but those are all out of the price range for the time being and i refuse to save up when i can go out and buy one  but i just need a good knife around 3 1/4 to 4.5 inches long, good steel (i'll take 420hc as long as its been buckinized!!!), little on the heavier side, ~4 ounces or so, preferably fixed blade, like a clip blade style.

but if not, i may have found it with the od-1, im just gonna spray it down with a little concrete mix to make it heavier. :D :D

anyways, im gonna hit the sack and think about it tomorrow, might hit up a couple feed stores around here to see what they have in stock, probably end up returning the od-1 tomorrow and ill have around a $40 limit then.

any thoughts or concerns?

thanks, jerry

The last 11 S&W knives that I had all broke on me from their "G-10" handles, to their "surgical" steel blades that didn't hold an edge.

I'd keep the OD-1 and go after a Kershaw Storm or something if you want heavy in that price range

Dinner for two is $55... I feel like a treat like a new knife is something you can enjoy for YEARS... that said... I find it odd when folks place such a low price tag on something that can/should bring you joy for a loooong time. Treat yourself to a nice "blue box" Benchmade or a nice Spyderco... YOU'RE WORTH IT!!!

That said... I won a Kershaw Skyline for a bowling prize (score 155 haha!) and it is actually a NICE knife for the $$$. It is nowhere as nice as a Benchmade Dejavoo or a Spyderco ParaMilitary, but I consider it worth the $40 that it costs... It is really light too... not crappy by any means... just an example of good technology!

I'm sure the OD-1 is a nice knife too! I'm kinda a PITA though... the only knives (in my price range) that have really made me smile outta the "box" are Reeve and Strider folders... but (my choices in) Spyderco and Benchmade always come close!

Everyone has an opinion, but, if some of the 40 dollar Kershaws can't make you smile you have become jaded, there are some dandies in that line-up. I had gotten into a rut a while back and went for a Seb, then a SNG, RCC, so forth and so on.... and still no spark. I picked up a Kershaw Zing and I am in love. I had started to make the ages old mistake that got me started down the path of thinking a knife's worth can be directly tied to its price tag. I'd say the average price of a knife in my collection is about 200 ish, but every time I go to replace that little $40 Kershaw all its charms just suck me back in, and, it goes right back into my pocket.

To the OP, give that OD-1 some time. It will probably grow on you. I usually have a hard time with a light feeling knife, but, often the lightness becomes a virtue in my eyes. If you are unhappy with the clip, shoot me an email. I have been carrying a clipless Zing on a U812 lanyard lately and find I really like it..... I have a spare I'll send you.... free shipping and everything. :)

The OD-1 is fine if you're looking for a knife in that size/weight range. The real answer to the question depends on your intended uses for your new knife. If you want a light easy to deploy knife for general cutting tasks then the OD-1 will serve you well. Kershaw makes a fine product with an equally good warranty.

However Walmart has a much better selection of knives and multi-tools on their web-site...some even marked down ( at least compared to my local wallyworld). They also carry the Kershaw Barrage and it's a little bigger and heavier.

Maybe you can return the knife for a store credit and buy one from their site?

Amongst my small collection (around 30 knives), my two favorite knives are a Queen D2 gun stock, provided to me through another forumite (thank you!), and a Winchester peanut purchased from Walmart 6 Christmases ago, but anyways I don't have the money for an expensive knife and a $55 knife is a treat to me and something I can cherish for a LONNNNNG time.

I decided to give the OD-1 some time after reading some of the posts. And, I forgot about the fact I can put the OD-1 on a lanyard. But, are you talking about a spare Zing or a spare lanyard or a spare pocketclip??
