Hi, I just wanted to see what you would do, but more importantly WHY you would do it. Would you A) return the knife B)use a little polish and pretend it never happed (please assume that the spot comes right off)
I would like also like to hear from dealers, to see what they would want me to do. - and yes this just happened to me.
Thanks Ed

It's all about perspective.

How wide spread is the rusting? If it is really bad and sticks out like a sore thumb, return it. If it's really tiny, I'd just Flitz it. Just recently I received a mini AFCK and the thumb hole had rust spots in it. I just polished it out. No biggie. If it is a > $100 dollar knife, I would return it. The dealer probably didn't have it in an ideal condition. Maybe manufacturer's fault. Who knows.

It's only in one spot, but it's a little bigger that usual, so I don't know how deep it goes.
Would it still be okay to return if I tried to polish it, but it was pitted, and therefore didn't come off right away?

I plan on it, but I was just wondering what you guys consider to be the Standard Operating Procedure when this type of thing occurs. Not to mention the fact that I use more than one dealer.

First off, did you buy the knife new in box? If so, I would return it, there's no reason for a brand new knife to have rust on it unless it wasn't packaged or stored properly. And tht would be the responsibility of the dealer and maufacturer, so you shouldn't have to suffer the consequences.
And what type of steel is it? Is it supposed to have a coating? Unless its used and made of something like uncoated M2 and the rust is very minor, I would take it back.
I don't always take the best care of my stuff, but I try and keep it in good shape. The last thing I want is to pay money for something that someone else has already damaged.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

Well, First I'd have to say you should have examined it at the store where you bought it.
(Assuming you didn't buy it mail order or online.) I don't know of any Dealer that would object to you being picky enough to ask for a different knife than the one he hands you.
I even check sharpness and if the first one I look at isn't sharp enough for my tastes I ask for a different one.
If I got the knife online and didn't have the chance to pick and choose, my next thought would be, is this a collector piece to keep in the box as an investment?
If so, send it back for another one if possible
If it's a USER, well then just polish it off and forget about it. It's going to get a lot of wear anyway, what's a little polishing going to harm?

I cut it, and I cut it, and it's STILL too short!

sorry, double post

As embarrased as I am to admit it, I usually get pretty excited when I purchase a knife. So, I forget to take a good look at it. But I don't think I'm the only one!!
I'd also like to add that it is much more difficult for me to return if it is a limited edition with a very low serial #. (Although this purchase wasn't a limited ed.)

My first thought is it depends on how picky you are and if you plan on using it.

I would ignore it if the spot will come of with a little Flitz or Metal Glow. If you plan on using it, I would not even do that as I always have that weird feeling when I use a knife for the first time. If it already has a wear mark I don't get that feeling.

Now if it is a piece you bought for a collection, then by all means return it.

Ed,

If it were me, I would prefer that you return it without trying to polish it first. The dealer you bought it from may still take it back, but I think it's best to return it in the same condition you bought it in. Trying to correct the problem first may cause problems for the dealer if he wants to return it to the manufacturer or distributor.

Regards,

Bruce
