We're hoping to go on a kayak trip up in the area, and being unfamiliar with the area we are looking for trip suggestions. Any info that might help would be very appreciated (kayak rental places, places to put in and go...places where there are not TONS of people)

Thanks, Kevin

Kevin,

There are two main places to put in to the BWCA. The Gunflint Trail, which is a 60 mile long road that is exceptionally beautiful and curvy. It is a real joy to ride on a motorcycle. It starts in Grand Marais, Minnesota, which is a quaint town right on Lake Superior. There are many lodges and outfitters that can supply you with everything you need to get as far away from people as you care to. Type in Gunflint Trail on your search engine and you should come up with a number of outfitters. Hungry Jack Lodge being one of them with a good reputation. I have been on the Gunflint Trail numerous times and would recommend it highly to anyone who wants to stay at a first class lodge or use one of the many outfitters along the trail to help get you deeper in. Remember that you need to obtain a permit to enter the BWCA. There is a ranger station right in Grand Marais that you can get one at. Find out ahead of time from your outfitter what you need to do to get it.
The other place to get into the BWCA is Ely, Minnesota. I have been to Ely, but never used it as my entry point. They have a big time tourism commitee/board that you should be able to find on the web also. I will tell you that you should use an outfitter on your first time in there. After that, you won't need them again.
I live on a lake an hour north of Duluth and if you can hack the horse flies and the incredibly nasty mosquitoes, there isn't a more beautiful and peaceful place than northern Minnesota. If you e-mail me your snail mail address, I will send you a copy of BWCA Journal. It is a info packed magazine that should have all of the info you need to find an outfitter.

Take care,

Jim

p.s.- We had one hell of a storm up there last summer over July 4th that blew down over a million trees. The fire danger rating right now up there is in the extreme range. Hopefully your outfitter would tell you this but you never know.

Thanks Jim, good info at the site you recommended. Thanks for the kind offer to send a BWCA Journal, but I've got a few recent issues that I've also found very useful.
Thanks again, Kevin
