Going to put up a VERY nice bow drill

and a modified hand drill.

This is a VERY complete bow drill kit with some jute for the birds nest.

This is modified for 2 reasons.

1. It came with "thumb loops" to make it easier to start a fire.
2. It came in broken. I didn't have the heart to ask Marty to ship another one, so I am going to make a new one out of oak.

The spindle has to be harder than the board. I also wanted to make my own instead of getting a new one because we have to learn to
improvise!

Marty from stickfires on ebay makes these. I know if I would have written him he would have sent a new one but I just don't see him spending
the exta postage for something I can make myself.

Marty makes all of these himself so the quality is top notch!
If you e-mail him or get a kit, please be sure to tell him PastorMarko sent you.

I don't quite get what you mean by "put up"

Are you giving these away, or just posting pics for us to look at?

What are the materials used in each kit (type of wood)?

Yup, new out of the shipping box. Wanted everyone to see.
Have to get out this weekend and get it going.

Will post what they are made of on the next post.

Thanks

I think, Tony that he just bought this stuff and wants to share.

Stop being a bully.

LOL, A bully. I am curious. Mark didn't say" hey check this out!" He said "put up"

And I was interested because I never got a hand drill coal before. And I want to know what the premade kits are made from.

So Marko, please let me know when you find out.

Thank you.

Got the e-mail out asking right now guys. I think the spindle on the hand drill was yucca, but had to make sure and make sure on the others.

I do know that the spindle needs to be made of harder wood than the board.

I am going to be making my own fire plow next month. Going to use cedar for the board and oak for the fire stick. We shall see how that goes, will post pics of that too.

FIRE PLOW, another friction fire method I have not yet attempted. I look forward to your sucess and the pics Pastormarko

It is simple in design, but requires alot, alot of exertion and force, by the whole of the upper body. Also, the coal just collects at the base, and is easily jostled with all the exertion.

Fire Plow and Fire Saw are both good skills to know, but consume alot of energy for the most part.

Here's a link to a fire plow article:

Yeah, I heard about that time when Tonym was at a dinner party and the hostess indicated she was about to 'put out' dinner.....Poor tony had to sit their quietly with the napkin over his lap. Well that must have been quite embarrassing :D
