How is this possible? Anyone ever experienced this? It literally explodes while working on a bow drills made with birch branches and bark.

Dust can be very volatile. I'm thinking the dust from the bow drill got hot enough to burst into flames.

A friend of mine was cutting metal with torches in a factory a few years ago and had a similar experience with dust. He bumped a steel support with his arms and the dust covering the I-beams up above him rained down dust all around him. When it came in contact with his torch it exploded into flames and gave him 2nd degree burns all over his hands and face.

You can do this with almost ANY kind of dust.

We make little packets of coffee creamer explode in our office pretty regular. :p

This is one of the biggest fire hazards to grain storage tanks.

Coal dust, grain bins, etc can all blow up. Dairy creamer is another weird one you would not expect.

I've never put birch bark in the notch like that.

Yeah grain elevators around here are notorious for that. It's the dust.

Dude I gotta try that!

I think that there was some funny business in that one. Not saying it couldn't happen, but my guess was some gun powder.

The way we make creamer flame up is hold a lighter and sprinkle the creamer above the flame. Once the right air/fuel mixture is reached the whole little cloud ignites.
The higher your cloud, the bigger your flame. :D

Its pretty childish, I admit it. Be warned, burnt up creamer stinks!

EDIT: I really doubt that dude was using coffee creamer... :p

crushed match heads possibly. Something more than the birch bark strip he fed into it.

Birchbark will do that if the conditions are right. We used to throw handfuls of the stuff into the burn barrel as a kid to make fireballs. :)

I almost gave it a thumbs down for total bullsh@t but didn't bother. LOL! Not going to happen like this with a bowdrill set.
