I notice that some use a Palm Rock for their bow drill fire kits.

How would you make the depression in the middle without splitting the rock?

Mason Bit?

Any Help?

Use another rock the Native Americans didnt have a masonary bit. If you use an bit be careful you can crack the rock (this depends a lot on what type of rock it is) if you apply any more pressure than the weight of the drill itself.

I've found rocks in creek beds with depressions in them from errosion, it is also possible to find these on beaches

If you try a motar bit go real slow. While fishing Lake Juliette we took a break from fishing and was going to walk the bank looking for stuff. Well, my buddy took about three steps and said LOOK! Side by side were two stones about the size of your fist with perfectly honed holes for firemaking with a bow and drill. If he wasn't my buddy he would have never made it back. I have never seen such perfect examples of craftmanship before in my life. And you could tell they had been used a great deal. What a rare find.
