Hi all,

Yesterday in was doing a little practice with the bow drill method. In this video I am using a hickory spindle and using a oak hearth board.
These 2 combonations for wood are kind of cool. It does take a bunch more strokes for getting my coal than with softer woods.

When you use harder woods for getting a coal they really are a dense and thick strong coal. Well at least that think that lol. Give it a try and see what you all think sometime.

Anyways, Just click on the pic and it should play through my photo buckets thingy lol.

Good stuff I've never attempted a bowdrill with oak..maybe I should as it is everywhere by me.. LOL Thanks

Oak is not on any suggested list I have ever been able to find. Many say to avoid it. I tried it just to be contrary - with no success.

Picked up some White Cedar last weekend. ^____^

Hi all,

RescueRiley, thanks bud. Yes give it is try. I am using pin oak in that video but we also have red, white and bur oak too. I have tried all 4 of them with success. and try different spindles. cottonwood, oak on oak, willow, sycamore white pine. Corn cob lol It works great too. less than 40 strokes on the average. Yucca, Oh heck just try a bunch and see what you think.

Thomas, There is are reason most do not try oak. It is freaking hard to do lol. Ok not really, Here is what you do cut it green and then split and shape and carve your peices while they are still wet. It is much easyer to do that way.
Then set them aside to dry for a few days in sun or next to a heater.
In a few days it will / should be dry enough to start practicing with. Try different spindles form different woods to.
mullberry is a kick butt wood with oak and so is hickory, cottonwood anyways just try a bunch different wood spindles.
See what you like and all that stuff.
I am going to post another video in a little bit. I started with green wood and well just watch the video lol

Take care all,

Bryan

Yea but a drill press has the spindle only going one way. try it with a bow and spin that spindle so that it is going back and forth. also try a cottonwood spindle on your red oak and see how that goes. Try several different spindles and see what you come up with.
I will be interested in hearing what you fine out.

Chat with you later,

Bryan
