I was watching Beyond Survival and saw an interesting slingshot made by the Veddah people of Sri-Lanka. The had a bow (like bow and arrow) with a modified string that could hold rocks for projectiles. I believe they said it was used to shoot birds but you can't quote me on that. I made a slightly smaller version and it shoots rocks pretty darn hard.

Here is the bow.

Nice edge left on the 3v Koster after several hard projects

Here is a Vid showing how hard it shoots

That was awesome. I'm going to try to make one soon and try it out.

Cool video - you would think that the bow would be in the way of the rock you are shooting. Nice job on that

Some glass breaking sound effects would've been funny on that 1st attempt :D

So Funny, as I watched that show last week I said to myself; "it's only a matter of time till that MD guy tries to make that sling shot" :D

Good stuff bro!

How is the accuracy compared to a regular sling shot?

Thanks Guys, this was a fun little build. I'm braiding a string right now out of dogbane so that my next one will be 100% natural materials, even the pouch.

It is in the way!!! I managed to shoot myself in the forehead with an acorn that bounced off the bow, left a nice mark that my wife noticed. I watched Les hit his thumb with a rock so I also held the bow a little low from center.

Accuracy of the bow is not bad. Accuracy of Md25v with the bow is terrible. Believe it or not, the twelve year old next door can hit soda cans with it at about 15 yards. I can barely hit a 5gal bucket at the same distance. Maybe I should have him do the accuracy portion of the next vid:D

I think it's just a bit of practice. The Veddah shoot it just fine because that's the weapon they are used to. I think if I keep with it for a bit I should at least be able to hit the soda cans like my neighbor's kid.
One problem with using a slingbow to throw a single rock is aiming. The arc of the throw, just like an atlatl, would require fletching on the projectile to go strait after release.

I'd like to see some tests done on velocity of the projectile compared to the traditional slingshot most of us are used too. Would be interesting to see.

I doubt the velocity would come close to a traditional slingshot.

Very cool video Md.
Interesting concept.

By the way, the Kershaw Outcast has seen a very productive summer :thumbup::D
No video's though, just lots of hard work!
Cheers

Dave, I'm glad your giving her the workout she deserves. It was hard to have that nice a chopper sitting in a corner while her prettier sisters always got to go out and play:D.

Search for "stone bow." Stone-throwing crossbows were used for hunting birds in medieval Europe (not for wing-shooting, though; the idea of wing-shooting birds for sport came much later).

Very cool experiment! I was thinking alot about that bow slingshot from the show as well, maybe Ill try one out as well, looks like you did a great job on yours. Now go practice aiming :D
