Bowfishing

Anyone done any bowfishing? I live in MA and would like to put my bows to good use once I finish them. I'm not entirely sure that it's possible to find fish to be shot at around here (especially in December), but what are your thoughts?

Sounds like a great idea to me. I have played around with bows and arrows quite a bit, but I've never skewered a fish with an arrow.

As soon as I read your post I thought of how important it is to make sure that the line attached to your arrow can freely spool off whatever it is wound on. I guess some rigs might be better than others, but in some circumstances if the line tangles or jams the arrow can get pulled right back and smack you like it is on a bit of elastic.

I guess you will be able to buy a decent attachment for the line if you choose to use line. For a makeshift line holder I'd consider winding it on the tapered part of a plastic soda bottle.

I guess in shallow ponds or creeks you wouldn't need a line.

I'll be careful with the line rig. I'll also try to use a line light enough that it would snap if it got jammed, rather than being strong enough to change the direction of the arrow. So far, though, my research hasn't turned up anyone who bow fishes in MA. Looks like it's more a southern thing.

To be honest I have no idea whether or not you have Europen / Grass carp in your area, but when they are either spawning ...

or feeding in close..

they would make an easy target for the bow.

Bear in mind you will need some way of staying in contact with the arrow after it is released (ie spool with attached string).

Good luck with your future "sight fishing"

Kind regards
Mick

What a heap of fish in one spot! What are they like to eat?
Thanks.... Coote.

That's only a very small fraction of what was in the bay that day (I estimated there must have been close to 10,000 in this area that day)

Between myself & my two friends, we landed 144 carp in about 6 hours with flyfishing gear

Here's a pic of a little over 1/3 of what was caught (I got sick & tired of carrying them back to the one spot for the pic :D )

Unfortunately because of their feeding habbits, here in Oz they have a weedy/muddy taste. If you can keep them alive & put them in clean water for a week or so, they taste much better

I don't like carp myself but folks here smoke them like salmon.

The back waters of the northern Mississippi River would be packed with fish like that.

Make sure to check the local laws, here only certain species are legal to shoot. I have never bowfished but have shot lots of bullfrogs, loads of fun. Chris

I have shot a few gar and carp with a 40 lb recurve. I dont know but a stronger bow may make it difficult to retrieve an arrow stuck in the muck. 30 lb is to week.

I can't help but think the Fresh water in Mass will not differ much from CT and NY, which is where I spend most of my time fishing. So having bow fished once, I will play expert:rolleyes:;)

My friend Richie loves to bow fish, but also loves to eat Carp, which coincidentally is the easiest fish to target while bow fishing. Be ready though, cause I see carp up 40 pounds over here. They will cruise the shallow flats of lakes here from spring to fall; making themselves easy targets.

Pickeral and Pike can be found in shallow weedy flats as well during the summer. They mostly stay close to cover looking to ambush an unsuspecting lil fish.

Large Mouth Bass will present them selves in the spring as they come up shallow to spawn. However even if shooting them during this time is legal (I doubt it is), it would be looked down on by most, including me. They are easy targets just sitting on the bed, and even if you shoot them after they dropped their eggs, the sunfish will pick the bed dry when you remove the bass from the area.

That's all I can think of for now.

Thanks for the explanation and pics Mick. These carp are regarded as a pest species, right?

G'day Coote

That's right, they are classified as a pest species

They make good fertilizer though :D

Kind regards

good god, you could just scoop those suckers out with a dip net. or spear them from shore.

i need to get back to australia sometime. :)

I used to do a fair amount of bow fishing, but almost all salt water species in the bays. Can't do much anymore on account of a trick elbow. The only freshwater species we shoot are gar and bowfin. Bass and other freshwater sport fish are protected from bow fishing, around these parts anyways.

There's quite a few guys around here that bow fish. The Delta has hundreds of miles of waterways that are mostly around 6-8 feet deep, loaded with bass. I've never tried it myself but would love to try sometime.
