Bowie Blade Experiences and Opinions????

The 13 and 16 have pronounced Bowie tips, and the 12 is kind of Bowie as well.

For utility applications, I can really see the advantage of a Bowie in that the tip is better for fine work. The possible disadvantage I see is that there is less metal up there, so it will be weaker (especially compared to something like the 10).

As a combat knife, I can imagine that the Bowie tip could catch on the backstroke, and that could be a definite advantage as well, as long as the tip is strong enough.

Anyway, wondering what everyone's experiences and opinions are with Bowine blades???

I carry a 12 every day and its top notch.

The blade shape actually makes for one of the better all round use blades.
It has a good point that is actually pretty strong. Iv not broken the tip yet and im not shy with with how i use it.
There is a flat portion to the blade as well as a bit of belly where it curves up to the point.
This allowes you a good range of tasks form skinning game or apples to carving wood or people.

The 13 is also a great knife, I sold mine on as it just wasnt for me but its still easily useable.
The 16 is right up there too, I dont have one but i have played with one a few times. The commander handle is a winner and the blade shape is good for a range of tasks also.

As to back cuts, Im sure the point would tear through most things but I would rather use a fixed blade with a sharpened portion or semi sharp swedge.
Stabbing and slashing is the way forward for folders if you have to use one for SD.
A back cut is far less effective than just rotating the wrist for another slash any way, IMO.

i also carry a '12 & '13 all the time and agree with haze,

imho the '12 is the very best production EKI, bar none:)

I havent handled a 12 or 16, but my 13 is a very common carry knife for me, and it works very well for many many tasks. I am sure back cuts with any folder is a bad idea but for just utility work it is great. This has turned out to be one of my favorites.

My new 12 has a great blade shape. It's actually far from weak. Like haze said, it's not a knife to be shy about using. This blade holds it's thickness all the way up to the tip. Great bladeshape for just about any task, and it's a little bit easier to sharpen than other types of blade styles.

I'm new to Emerson knives.I just got a 13 and I'm nothing short of blown away by it's quality.I like the bowie shape.
