Bowie Guard Designs?

Just wondering if there is much to say about the design of bowie guards: size, shape, etc.

Seems I've seen
1. None
2. Bottom only
3. Top & Bottom- narrow, wide, mixed
4. Shapes: Flat, Flat with end "bumps", "C"-shape, "S"-shape

My thoughts are with regard to fighting styles.

I like the S-guards, there are a lot of people out there who also like the D-guards
