So I'm in the market for a new bowie knife. I currently have a crappy timber rattler. Admittedly I love the size of it, as well as the feel of the hilt, along with the forward finger groove at the base of the blade, but the steel of the blade is just garbage. So essentially what I want is a bowie knife in a similar style and size, but with a better blade and was hoping someone could make a few suggestions.

What my timber rattler looks like.

Welcome.

1) How much do you want to spend?
2) What do you want to do with it?
3) Does it have to look a lot like that knife, uncoated, double guard, clip point, etc.?

The Kabar Large Heavy Bowie is a great knife for not a on of money, but I don't know if the look is working for you, or if "look" matters, etc

Bowies have always appealed to me, but I never had much use for one after I bought it. I have no idea of your budget, but considering that the Timber Rattler is about a $20 knife, I suspect your budget is not huge. My suggestion is that you consider a Kabar Becker BK-9 which runs around $100. It is a very good cost effective knife and well loved by the knife community here.

The one that first grabbed me was the Cold Steel Natchez Bowie but it is much more expensive, but is a classic bowie with fair carbon steel blade (SK-5).

Some other ones to look at are the SOG bowies which I suspect you might like, but don't have the wide blades. They are more "combat bowies" and they run over $100. I have a couple SOG bowies and they aren't bad overall.

If you are searching, I would start at about the $100 mark and start reading. Most of the stuff from United and companies like that are Chinese made and typically not good steel. Probably about like the Frost Cutlery knives. With all the steel you're buying you will be paying for it if it is of even reasonable quality.

Condor makes a bowie or two you might consider. They won't be bad knives and certainly better than what you have. I like Condor stuff and buy their machetes.

Take a look at the Blackjack Halo. The model 1-7 is a big slim knife I like.
