I've recently found myself very interested in the history and use of the Bowie knife, and would like to continue learning. At this point I think I've got an excellent start with Bill Bagwells "Bowies, Big Knives, And The Best Of Battle Blades" as well as both of James Keatings "ABC's and Legacy Of Steel" tapes.

Was wondering what other resources you might suggest? (decent webpages count also)

I'm particularly interested in books, jus' cuz there aint nuthin' like curlin' up with a good cup of coffee and a good read on a crappy winter day, and winters comin' on fast here in Alaska.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Man, you live in Alaska! That means you don't have to just read about Bowies like us poor bastids in the NYC area, you can live it likeDavy Crockett! Strap on a bowie and get out there!

P.S. Please don't tell me something like Bowies not being permitted, or Alaska not being the last frontier like I imagine, or you will have destroyed all hope for my future Alaskan dream trip. Thanks!

Hell, you kiddin' man? I git ta' carry the biggest, meanest handguns out there jus' about everywhere I go without a permit up here!:D :D

It's very common in the summer to see folks in my hometown carryin' large bore revolvers through the grocery stores, gas stations, etc.

Last time I went camping and stopped into a 7-11 there was an off duty military guy carrying a M-9 Bayonet, and a Ruger automatic pistol, while I was carrying my BK-5 and a Smith&Wesson .45 revolver. in the meantime My wife was repacking the truck and had my 870 and an '06 dug out in the parking lot, while Jessie the Pitbull kept a close eye on anyone that came near me. (protective sort he is) sound like a good place to rob?:D

Not like that in Anchorage, but you know what they say...Alaska is only twenty minutes outside of Anchorage...:D

Whoah, I wanna visit Alaska sometime. Mind telling us what part of Alaska you reside in?

I live in a rather small town called "Wasilla" It's about 40 miles or so North of Anchorage- about an hour or so from Anchorage International Airport. If anyone is goin' to Denali, or Valdez, you can't get there without passing through the Palmer Wasilla area.

moved here in '91 my junior year in High School, and still can't imagine a better place to live and raise a family. (Ask me again about mid-January and the answer will probably change) All the landscape around me is breathtakingly beautiful, there's tremendous amounts of personal freedom, and still plenty of elbow room. I'm an hour away from an expensive dinner, play, and a night in a luxury hotel, or just a few minutes from disappearing into the mountains as deeply as I could ever want to go.

(and the post regarding guns, etc. WAS accurate, but to be honest most of us are a helluva lot more laid back than that.) In a nutshell, if you get in trouble for carrying a weapon up here, chances are VERY likely that you've damn well done something to deserve it.

Wow...I think I just did a first in Bladeforums....I've hijacked my own thread...:D

(I'd be glad to try my best to answer any further "Alaska" questions if ya' drop an email to gcs2inak@hotmail.com) Although my schedule often times gets pretty hectic and it may be a few days before I get back to ya'...

So, anyhoo, about dem bowie knives...

Something focusing more strongly on the back cuts would be pretty cool. So far I've been SHREDDING carboard between back cuts, and thrusts. It's definitely something to focus in on, me thinks. I'd like to try it on a decent sized chunk of meat and see how it works. The results on cardboard are undoubhtedly impressive, but not what I'd hope at this point. I imagine flesh would yield more readily than dense cardboard though. Practice, practice, practice, eh?

It's a long way from Alaska, but if you ever find yourself in San Antonio, Texas, be sure to visit the Alamo. It is a Bowie knife lover's paradise. There are some famous original Bowie knives on exhibit in the church, including a knife that belonged to Davy Crockett, and a display on the history of the Bowie knife with some beautiful examples in the gift shop.

I'm quite likely to find myself there some day. That's where most of the wife's family hails from. Would definitely LOVE to go there. If I don't melt away first.:D
