Bowie Knife Sheath

I like to make period knives- old America West era. In any event a lot of the sheaths for Bowie knives had a metal collar around the top with a frog. The top often had a hammerred or turned over rim. The tip of the sheath was also metal, sometimes with a ball right at the end- although that may be a modern "replica" development. The leather was brown or red- or black- often laced up the middle- either front or back. I am told the leather was a thin covering over either wood or papier mache.(sic?).
I have tried to make such a sheath but all I get are problems. How do you make the two metal parts and how are they held in place? What I am looking for is a tutorial on making such a sheath- how was it done?
Any help appreciated.

Here's a Bruce Evans throat and tip sheath.

This particular one is bookbinders leather over kydex.
While kydex may not be traditional, it sure works.
:D

Ebbtide ,Bruce makes some of the finest throat and tip sheaths out there. It's a real shame that he's not that active anymore. I think this piece may have been the last really high end piece that he's made, but it certainly is a beauty!

Yes John he isn't that active.
He's been having some health problems and hopefully he'll get 'back in the saddle' again.
I've keep after him to get in the shop :)
