Today I wanted something to read.
This time it was a book from the "wild west". It had a picture of some bowie knifes, yet no further explanation of history and why the design is the way it is.

My questions to you is:

Why did mr. Bowie design it that way?

How big was it originally?

Wich companies makes good bowies today?

A search of the archives, using the word "Bowie" will turn up hours of good readinng

I know that I am going to catch Hell for this from some of the purists out there, but I am still going to recommend Raymond W. Thorp's book, "The Bowie Knife". It is out of print, but I found a copy at a good price in a British book store through abebooks.com http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookDetails?bi=64337328 so, you might give it a try. It is a piece of Americana in and of itself.

There is also this: "Bowie : A Novel"
by Randy Lee Eickhoff and Leonard C. Lewis, which, while never claiming to be a true biography, is a very well researched efort to tell Bowie's story, and has THE best collection of stories about the Sandbar Brawl that I have seen, stories from all points of view.

The current issue of Knives Illustrated has a good article by Bernard Levine on the evolution of the "Bowie Knife" design to what is now a big clip point blade.

Hi Norwegian
Take a look for ha ha's
at my M#136 , M#142 these are reproductions I did of 100 + year old ones.
I have others not listed that I've done also, just if your interested, these are
just about as close to the original as you can get, to the original makers of these ones. Michael Price had some nice pieces.
...Dan

Good thing my knives are sharper then my spelling.
