Bowie Machete or Tomahawk?

Okay, I finally narrowed what I want to buy down to 2 choices. They are both from Cold Steel, and it's either going to be the Bowie Machete, or the Trail Hawk. But I'm not sure which one would be the most versatile, best for self-defense, durable, etc. What do you guys think?

the CS machete's are AWESOME for the price.

However i have to say the TrailHawk here, you won't get near the wear and tear IMO when comparing them. But this comparison is far from fair, and is sure to set people at odd's just because they are so different and equally loved. (speaking of machete's and Hawks in general.

Neither buy an HI khukuri.

Sure, kukri's are nice. But I'm not really sure if I'm interested in one. IMO a hawk chops better then a kukri does, just by it's very nature. And a machete has a better reach and is lighter for alot of work. But I'm sure somebody is going to disagree with me on this.

I prefer machetes by far, but if those are the only two options I'd say go with the hawk. The bowie machete just doesn't have the kind of forward mass to really stack up, in my opinion. Personally I'd say go with a more front-heavy machete. :)

The Cold Steel hawks are superb quality, made of drop forged 1055 high carbon steel which is pretty much ideal. I have a Trail Hawk myself, it's not my favorite but for the 20 dollar pricetag it's a superb performer. Lightweight, durable, extremely well balanced. Overall it's much better quality than the CS stainless steel machetes... I think that's what I'd go with between those two choices.

Cold Steel also offers a Kukri machete that I have had good look with. They are offered in two lengths. They are good choppers with good weight out front.

GEt the Bowie machete, its more practical and better for slef defense. You have to put a good edge, the original wont cut a string. One you reprofile the edge you'll have a terrific big knife. The steel is pretty good.

I think the machete is a better defence tool, its desighn lends itself to light chopping, vines small branches ect... and the full blade can copensate slightly for poor defensive training.

The hawk is a fabulous survival tool exelling in shelter building, light forced entry, basic survival, and delivering a crippiling blow in a densive role. however its small cutting area requires slightly more aim and extra weight make it slower.

All that crap bieng said, your probably never going to use this item for defence so buy the one that you feel the most cofortable with.

between the two?
SD=bowie
chopping=tomahawk

its simple physics a hawk will out chop any sub 16in machete

if you want a real monster try a busse NMFBM
