I'm looking for suggestions on a good Bowie-style knife to use for hunting/skinning, light brush work, and if need be, fighting. Suggestions? Try to keep the price down to reasonable college-student levels. haha ;) :cool:

Hmmm were you in Europe I'd say Muela, they do really nice bowies in 440C really sharp, nice fit and finish. You can get them at 80 euro tops (for the bigger models) over here. I have no clue about US prices though or if you even can get them over there.

Cheaperthandirt.com carries Muela. Their price for a stag handled bowie is around 70 bucks.

Randall model 12 6" sportsman Bowie. I really prefer the regular Randall shape or the English fighter profiles by various manufacturers.

"use for hunting/skinning, light brush work, and if need be, fighting."

Your intended uses are somewhat mutually exclusive.
Should get several blades to cover your needs and abandon the concept of knife fighting. Hasn't anyone told you how dangerous that is?

Bowie for brush clearing...OK;
Becker BK9
Swamp Rat Battlerat.
But a machete makes a much better brush clearing tool.

Hunting/skinning.
3-5 inch blade like a loveless or any of probably millions of wonderful skinning designs.
Im gonna go with a Bark river small here cause they look pretty cool.

FIghting Bowie;
Bagwell Helles Belle
Mineral mountain
Or gulp, CS Trailmaster.

Knife is a tool, use the right tool for the job.

Hi!
I will recomend what i think is the best bowie knives that are produced. First the Fallkniven NL1 Tor bowie and second the Cold Steel Laredo bowie.

The Cold Steel bowie is more designed to be a weapon withs it´s longer blade and it´s sharpened back edge.The steel is Carbon V.The Fallkniven NL1 Tor has a smaller blade(10")and is made of stainless laminated VG-10 steel,and it does not have a sharpened back edge.However,it could for sure be a good fighter too,but i belive that it is better as an utility bowie.

Manowar

I have had the Trailmaster Bowie from CS

I now carry the Laredo from CS.

It's an inch longer and made of better steel.

Runs real good
