Bowie Recommendation Please

I would like to get a Bowie type knife and need some recommendations. I plan on using the knife some but would also like something that looks good. I am thinking about an Allen Blade Bowie (just got a Field Trek from him a couple of weeks ago that I am very happy with) and a SOG Bowie (really like the looks, but don't know what to expect on performance). I would like to keep the cost below $250.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Allen Blade will make you a Great knife well within your budget. Don't give it any more thought. Just call Allen. I promise you will be very happy you did.

I have a Cold Steel Trail Master Bowie that I am very pleased with.

coldsteel trailmaster I second it. I have one and it is awesome great balance. I'd feel comfortable fighting or survival. It is so well rounded and tough.

There are plenty of good makers to choose from. I dont own any Allen Blade stuff, but plenty of people whose opinions I trust speak extremely well of his stuff. There is also a maker named Max Burnett of OGG custom knives. He goes by MaxTheKnife on the forums. He can do stock removal, or forging. I have several knives from him...4 now, 4 more coming. 2 of them are bowie size. The first and closest to what you are looking for is the OGG Comabat Bowie. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=110070&a=4518795&p=30815018 It will chop, cut and slice for as long as you need it to, and is always ready for more. The second large one I have is one that Max and I had discussed briefly, and he came up with the final knife. Its called the Aardvark. It is a bowie size knife with a wharncliffe blade. While not quite as versatile as the Combat Bowie, it sure scores high in the cool factor

The Aardvark is here. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=110070&a=4518795&p=32513477 Max is somebody you should consider along with the many other fine makers around. Good luck, let us know what ya decide.

I will also recommend Allen Blade. He does excellent work. His knives offer a lot of bang for the buck.

Also look at Matt Lamey. Matt is definately one to watch. He has a great career ahead of him. www.lameyknives.com

I just bought an Ontario production version of the Bill Bagwell Hells Belle and it is just about the most perfect production Bowie that I have seen in some 40 years of looking and collecting them. However, it is a weapon or fighting knife only, not a utility knife. I cannot see it as a camp knife or a small axe, but it is a wonderfully lively and apparently lethal device in the hand and, if you train seriously with James Keating's tapes on Bowie Fighting, if that's your thing, you should be quite formidable. I collect them, so that last is mostly conjecture on my part. I also have seen and felt some of the Randall Bowies, and can say that they are true marvels in the hand and some could also be great camp knives, indeed the Randall No. Fighter, their classic, is really naught but a modified Bowie, and it has certainly stood the test of time and at least three wars. I would, however, suggest micarta or some hilt material other than their standard leather washers.

I just saw this post. Jump on it, if you are interested, as the best price that I found on a Hells Belle is about $200.

If anyone's interested AG Russell is having an inventory reduction sale of Ontario Bagwell bowies. The Hell's Bell is $130 and the Fortress is $100. You need to give them a keycode of EIR1100B to get the pricing. Seems a great deal on these fighting bowies!

Two names come to my mind: Allen Blades and Matt Lamey.

I agree Allen's knives are very nicely made and are a great bargin. Matt's knives are really nice, I hope to own one, one day.

My other recommendation would be Marble's line of Bowies:
7" Trailmaker - http://www.marblearms.com/tm7.html
10" Trailmaker - http://www.marblearms.com/tm10.html
Loveless Trailknife - http://www.marblearms.com/ltk.html

All of the Marbles knives can be found on the net for 10-20% below retail.

Take care,
Tom

Thanks for all the compliments guys, much appreciated.

I agree that Allens work is very good, and another to watch is Bill Seigle. He is making some bowies with cord wrapped handles that are really neat... kinda east/west styling, and great prices.

Later, Matt.

Well, it looks like I am just a little late. Allen and Matt are makers whom you should seriously consider. I have one on order from each of them, and honestly, I am starting to get a little itchy now

Wow,

Thanks for the great response folks. Several of the recommendations look really good to me.

The Bagewell Bowies look like great fighting tools and collectors, but I am looking for something with a bit more utility.

It looks like there are some good options in both the custom and production. The bad news is, it looks like it may be hard to stop at one (two, three,...)

Thanks again. I will let you know what I decide on.

Kirk

P.S. Don't stop with the recommendations.
