Hi all,
I am working on a re-creation of a large Civil War era D-Guard Bowie knife and would like to make a period sheath like the one shown below.

I have never made something like this, and wondering if anyone would mind sharing the process or steps and any tips or tricks you may have learned ?

My biggest concerns are how to attach the metal ends to the leather and how to line the sheath. I am guessing it needs a liner of sorts to prevent the metal from scratching the knife,???

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Ed

Could be brass or silver molded to fit over the leather as well, with small barbs on the inside to bite the leather. I would say silver if it had carvings on it more expensive and ornate.
the bite could be between the two leather and glued or "welded together".

I wasn't real clear in my original post that I am making a Civil War period piece(added above) so I will use either silver or brass, but rather plain and worn looking.

Thought of using contact cement, but most old Bowies from that era that I have seen, if they had the metal throat and tip they had a rivet of sorts holding them. I don't know how they peened/closed that thing with one end inside the sheath.

I had thought of using wood, covered with leather and pinning the metal pieces through the sides. Thought about if only leather for the sheath it could be pinned through the welts as well.
Problem is, I had planned on making the sheath with the one seam up the middle of the back. That may have to change. ??

I think this sheath will be harder than the knife to make. :-)

Debating on using plain distressed leather as the finished knife will be made to look to be an old/authentic battlefield piece. Wood or antler handle, wrought iron D-guard.

Oh yeah, lots of good stuff there. Thank you again for taking the time to point out these links.
