Bowie style curve. Designed for batoning?

Could the curve on the front part of the spine have been designed with batoning in mind? It sure seems conducive to the round shape of a small log. Was it meant for some other purpose? I never understood the reason for the shape. Doesn't mean I don't love it though.:D

And the blade in the pic is a Mike Mooney custom in case you were curious.

The curve makes it ideal for back cuts and creates a nice penetrating tip. I don't know if that was the specific design, but it's certainly been retained through generations of "fighter" knives.

Batoning through it seems a little frightening, as you are slamming into where there is less metal, but in a pinch...

The clip point is a secondary edge for back cutting. If it even has a false edge, it will tear up your beater stick in short order. Smacking it with a small log is also a good way to bust off the tip of your knife. Hit the spine directly on top of where you want to use your knife as a wedge to split the wood and stay as far away as possible from the thinner tip of your blade.
