Interested in a big blade. Maybe a bowie knife but came across the Jager sword by Ontario Knife Co. Anyone out there have/handled one of these? 15" blade and kydex sheath, looks agile and the steel is decent and the price ain't bad. Any thoughts?

I've got webtv and not too familiar with posting a link on this site, yet. Don't want to be guilty of spamming! These Ontaro swords(Swords of Blackwind) are at {theknifecenter.com} I have their katana and was looking at their Jager sword, but it seems to be not much more than a Bowie knife and with the great variety of bowies out there, I thought I might try to get some advice from one who had one for a comparison wit the Bowie blades out there.

If you are looking for a good, solid, heavy duty bowie, the Jager is not it. It is the same stock as the katana that you have (.125"). Get the Marine Raider bowie by Ontario. Nice price and a HELL of a heavy duty knife with the Ontario quality. It is .250" thick and a great chopper.

DANKE! THX for the info. I will check out that blade. Also posted on the sword section and got a response from Mineral Moutain. Man! that ole-boy got some mean looking Bowies too!

Check out my remarkable in depth review of the Marine Raider Bowie on the review forum.

finchatton, it depends upon what you want it for, but Ontario also makes some of what are reputed to be the absolute best production fighting Bowies going, the production versions of Bill Bagwell's Bowies. I bought one of their Hells Belles and it is a wonder, it is very light and fast in the hand, almost anticipating your moves, and it has the most wicked clipped point for snap cuts that I have ever seen. But bear this in mind, Bagwell's designs are weapons, not "utility tools". They aren't heavy enough to chop down trees or split wood, but they sure do appear to slice meat or other soft material.

Mineral Mountain has some outstanding stuff, also, but in a slightly higher price range. I have a custom on order from them now...
