Last fall I was challenged by a customer to build a Bowie with a Christmas theme. I asked him if he wanted that in the handle or the blade. He suggested that I do both and this is what I ended up with:
Initially I had tried to get a snowflake look down the center of the blade but ended up with more of the look of frost crystals
. Wrapped around the center mosaic I welded some twist pattern to represent a Christmas wreath on a window with the frost crystals on the window showing through the center of it.
The scrimshaw was done on some fossil walrus by a good friend, Jim Krause of Farmington, MO. I had been saving this piece of walrus for just this type of piece since it was much whiter than most fossil ivories. I had asked Jim to give me a Currier & Ives look and thought that he did a fantastic job. (The reverse has a similar but different two horse sleigh.)
Let me know what you think.
