Bowing / Crooked Blade Spine on my M-43?

I just got my first Kuk... I nice M-43 and this thing is a beast. Since this is my first Kuk I noticed while I've been cleaning and messing w/this that the spine has a bit of bow/bend to it when you look down the spine f/the top. It's not terrible... but it it noticeable.

I doubt this will cause any problems when chopping and using this bad-boy, but wanted to know if this is common. I know that larger/longer blades can warp a bit during heat treat and that's not a concern when it comes to a user (which this will be) but I wanted to get some input f/the more experienced Kuk users here.

I'll try and get some pics up later so you can see what I'm talking about and since we all love knife pics.

It's not a common occurence, but it does happen. Handmade knives are seldom perfect even in the best of times. It's possibly the reason it was listed as a DOTD. It won't hurt the performance of the edge and unless it's drastically outta whack it should not affect your aim. If you are dissatisfied with it you will have to contact Auntie about returning it for something else.

Isn't that the neem handled M43 by Murali? It is not common to have a bend in the blade. Surprising to see it come from Murali, since he's been around for a while. I've got a BGRS he made that I like very much. Try to get some pics up so that we can see what ya got. The hardening is done at the cutting edge, harder at the "sweet spot".

It's common to have SOME curve in the blade.

Even my Tarwar made by Bura doesn't have a completely straight blade.

OK... can't find my decent camera but took a couple pics w/ my Iphone so hopefully you can see what I'm talking about.

Also, this one was not purchased f/ the DOTD as I was a bit too slow to get that one... however this one has the same handle material.

There is also a nice big black mark on the blade end... hopefully just cosmetic. Since this is going to be a user it doesn't bother me unless it's a fault in the heat-treat or steel.

It looks like I've been out of the loop for a while. How long has HI been making their full tang knives with three, rather than two, rivets?

I had similar bowing in one of my ASTKs and Yangdu happily exchanged it for another. That's why I keep supporting HI! If you can live with it, more power to you. But I just couldn't keep picking it up without the bowing scream at me. Can i just tell you how much i appreciate my straight ASTK now!

they make them with three or two, depends on the handle and the Kami.
I have several of each and there seems t be no real rhyme nor reason to it.

Thanks for the photos. It does look like you have a little bowing there. If you just can't stand it, like moogoogaidan, give Yangdu a call. She honestly wants you to be happy with your khuk.

As for the black mark on the blade, I'm just guessing that it may have gotten a splash of laha that was wiped off or maybe something spilled by the sarki and wiped off. I seriously doubt that it has anything to do with the heat-treat. If it were heat treat related, someone along the line would have yanked it from sale.

In particular the ones like that M43 with no center ridge, have a third pin there instead.

Redsnake: the black mark looks like left over rouge from polishing, or possibly a spot not completely polished.
