Good Day,

I am planning on purchasing a bowl knife.

And I am wondering, do I have to get both a full curve and a half curve, or can I get just one?

And if I get just one, which one?

Best,
Marion

You could definitely make do with one. Wider sweeps are generally for larger bowls or spoons, but only to really save you time on large scale work and have a wider scoop, but this can be achieved with both...

The Mora's are inexpensive and solid. Ragnar's Forge sells them. The bottom would be considered more 'general use':

Pineweed Forge has this general use beauty, their hook knife:

Pineweed uses tapered points and the Mora's offer them as well....

Hope this helps!

I have a #163 picture above and another one with a full curve and tapered point. The full curve tapered point works for in much tighter spots.

I have always wanted one of these but one question has always stopped me. This seems like a good place to ask it as any.

How do you guys sharpen these?

go for the full curve, you will get more use out of it and is all you need unless you really take to bowl carving.
Hey Matt, really easy wrap/glue some fine wetdry to a piece of dowel and hone away.
Then charge the dowel with some compound to finish. You can get real fancy and glue leather to a dowel but smooth wood hones fine.

Makes sense. Thanks!

I have just used hoof knives to carve the few spoons I've carved ( I shoe horses so I have those laying around) they are very similar to these knives but not as much curve ( except the loop knives which are a complete loop) and I sharpen mine with a dremel or a chainsaw file. If you're careful you can get a hair shaving sharp blade in no time either way.

Hope this helps

I have #162, and have been unable to do anything with it. It's dull as hell, and I have no idea how to even begin to sharpen it.

I've got the full curve and love it, but am planning on getting the other too.

Well, I am going to buy a mocotaugan as well, which will help with the general carving...

So, I think will have a good knife, a carver, a mocotaugan, and a bowl knife, I should be well set up. Then, if I find that I really need a half curve, I will get one.

Best,
Marion
