OK... I'm looking for a good bowling ball. I'm a beginner, so it doesn't have to be top of the line. Any suggestions? Also, do you all know of any good websites that sell and/or have information on purchasing bowling balls? I'll continue to do some web searches while your replies come in. Thanks.

If you bowl straight, I still recommend the Columbia 300 white dot.

If you are a hook bowler, the Hammer and Nail(that is two balls depending on lane condition) are top notch hook balls.

Read up around the web, and ask bowlers on your league or at your lanes what they use, and why.

Best Regards,

Just go in to the local pro shop at your bowling alley. They are all real helpful. They will have you throw a few ball down the alley. They will suggest the best weight and type of ball. I would get something that you can hook with. Eventually you will learn how to do it. I would also ask about a package special, ball, bag and shoes. If you join a league it can be alot of fun! One of the most exciting events I saw on tv was a perfect 300 game bowled. I know most people just don't or won't get it, but to the bowler this is the ultimate. Good luck and let us know what you go with.

Hi All-

I don't know if it's any help, but Fred and Barney used roughly-honed granite bowling balls.

Ask your teammates where they go theirs, or stop bu the pro shop at the alleys you'll be bowling at. If you're in decent shape, you should get the maximum weight, 16 pounds (F=ma). Get something that will gives you a slight hook now with the type of surface that will work best on your lanes (pro shop should be able to help there as well) If/when you get good and want to have the ball hook more, it can be plugged and re-drilled (or you can keep it and get another).

One thing to watch for is bowing on Saturday afternoons for practice, then bowling in a league... Your hook may work just excellent (or even too much) on dry, weekend lanes, but won't do anything but slide into the 6/10 pin in league play(4/7 if your a southpaw). (The centers spread oil on the lanes and they can control exactly how much goes where. The more oil that's out there's the less your ball will hook). The high dollar pros have over 100 balls in trailers that they take with them if they can, all to use on different lane conditions.

I've seen some 300 games bowled, even seen some 800 series's bowled. The best was the phone call my youngest brother gave me on a Wednesday night couple years ago. (Kinda startled me that the phone rang late at night during the week like that) He had his games that he wanted to brag about... 300, 299, 279 for an 878 series, 5th highest ever in the the state of Pennsylvania! Both my brothers have bowled perfect games, 285 was the best I could do...

Bowling balls are like knives in that it's your preference and how you use them - hook, slice (from the Brooklyn side), straight. Several folks have offered sage advice in seeking help from the Pro Shop and I concur. How a ball behaves is a result of many variables including your approach, your release, your grip, condition of the lanes, and the weight, material, and quality of the ball itself. Consistancy is your key and the Pro Shop can help with all of these.

My personal favorite in ball selection dovetails with Homer's idea though - "Black, marbelized with a liquid center. The Stealth Bowler. The pins don't know what hit 'em." Now if I could only find a reasonably priced facsimile thereof......... :D

A bowling-thread. Nice! :D

I happen to have bought my first bowling ball two weeks ago. AMF Xtreme. 15 lbs.

Everyone i talked to recommended a polyster ball for me as a beginner.
You can drill the ball so it allows you to play straight or a curve.
When your throws are more constant and you want your ball to hook even more you can go for a more aggressive ball, reactive or particle.

What is your average score? :)
