Bowmaking tutorial

My dialup won't process the pics in your link- or it will, in about an hour, I think. I have a question: have you ever made a bow out of Serviceberry (Juneberry) or Chokecherry wood?

thanks,

munk

Hawkwind, have you ever seen Primitive Archer magazine, if not check it out. It's got lots of cool projects like the one you posted, with different tips every month. Everything from making the bows, to making the points and arrows as well as best places to get sinew etc... . Thanks for the interesting information.

Hawkwind that is exceptionally nice! Very well done!!!!:)

Do you have any measurements you use when laying out the handle? I've been wracking my brain and the best I can remember, I'm pretty sure, is that you find the center and make a mark. Then you make a mark 1" up from there, and another mark 3" below the center. The shorter limb is the top one. Have you ever heard of anything like that?
I wish I could find some Ash like that!!!! :)

Awesome!
Thanks. There was a fellow making bows of osage orange... tough wood. I've got to try this out this summer.

Yvsa, I m making that 1 inch offset for english longbows only. With flatbows I make both limbs the same lenght. This wood is actually leftover from carpenter shop, not stave, thats why I have to chase ring.

I m subscriber of PA magazine, they have a forum full of fine people too.
4 years I was only bowless archer (no makers of wooden bows here) and today I make bows for living thanks to them .

That is very impressive. Something else to try in my spare time. Wish I had some.

I can teach you all you need to know in about ten minutes.
You'll need several spiral notebooks, some black and red pens, an unlisted telephone number in a fake name, and several radios so you can hear the scores from different games, finishes at the horse track, etc...

You'll want to keep a good record of how much every guy bets and how much he owes you if he loses.
Sometimes its good to have some thugs around to help you collect your winnings.
Other than that, its all common sense...
