Howdy There Ya.....!
Got a question about making box handles for blades. Anyone know where I can get some information on how to do it. Have been seeing them and would like to give it a try. Any help would be appreciated.

What is a Box Handle?????? Are you talking about the metal framed handle that gives the look of a full tang????
Bruce

Sorry, your right...! I wasn't sure of the terms. It does give the look of a full tang.
Thanks "Possum"

I think I can help out some here.
Follow this link to my tutorial on this style of handle.Remember that you can make the handle shape anyway you want not just the way I have it,This wil give you the basics.

Howdy There Mr. Bruce..!
Excellent instructions, I now have a better understand ing of what I am trying to do. I do have one more question. After shaping and drilling themetal frame, do you heat treat it or leave it soft..? I was planning to use 440C for the frame.

Hey, Bruce...

I guess I'm just not getting it...if you want the look of a full-tang blade, why not just make a full-tang blade?

Is it because you can't fit the guard over the tang? That's the only thing I can guess, so enlighten me!

Thanks!

Kalindras.Yes it is so you can put a handle that fits properly but is bigger than the ricasso area of the knife thus not being able to get the guard over the handle. This isthe way allot of the old Sheffield and San Fransico knives were made.Allot of them had Nickel Silver or silver Frames also so that would also be a reason to make the handle this way. This type of handle opens up a whole bunch of handle to Blade possiabilities that just a regular full tang wouldn't allow.

Now, that is just too cool!

Thanks for that link Bruce. Your tutorials look to be a rich resource. I had to book mark it for later study.
I'm glad I dropped in here!:D

Just in case any body is curious about the strength,or are afraid of the strength of this type handle.I can guarantee it to be as strong as any handle you would want to put on a knife. This handle system is what i use on my Dragon Slayer Bowie, which is pictured in my link banner. That Knife in the Banner is the same Bowoie that Mario-Gaucho_ tested and it even passed his leg of lamb test. There used to be review on James keatings site. But I think he has taken it off,So I will get with Mario and get it posted up on my web site.Sing also has tested one of these Bowies and another one of my Bowies with the coke bottle handle with no problems,You can find his reviews in the review forums archive.

Thanks for the explanation, Bruce!

I reinvent the wheel a lot...so I'm always trying to make it squarish!

:D

Bruce, yer an amazing feller. I've got to try and make it to your shop sometime (after I get an invite of course) so we can compare notes. I'm bad about re-inventing the wheel too and you just seem to have it all together. Your willingness to invest the time in your turorials speaks for itself. You're a rare individual. Keep it up buddy. Folks like you will help to revolutionize the knife making community. Thanks for all your tutorials. I've learned a great deal from them.

Bruce,

This is a great tutorial! Just one question: How do you then attach the handle to the knife? Pins + epoxy? or do you recommend some other attachment medium?

Thanks for your tutorials. They really make me feel like getting out and making a knife.
