It is a thin flexible metal ruler. They are super handy, especially when measuring on a radius and they make a great straight edge.

Here is a slide rule, it is a bit of brilliance from the past.

I inherited my paternal grandfather's (1911-1963) slide rule.
I never did know how to use it. No idea what happened to it.

My Dad collects slide rules. They're a pretty good tool for giving you a feel for a solution - for seeing how much changing the starting conditions will impact the results.
