Boxes

I hate these danged knife boxes, they pile up everywhere, takes forever to even figure out which one they go to, they take up valuable life space and just plain annoy me. I’m considering just tossing them as they show up in the mail. Obviously if it’s a piece you’re buying as a collector then it matters but if you’re gonna use the knife does it make a difference? Will you not buy a used knife without the box? How significant of a price reduction do you need if a used knife doesn’t come with a box?

If I am going to use a knife I still look for the knife to have the box if I am buying on the secondary market. It gives me some confidence the person took care of the knife and thought enough to keep the box and other accessories. If I change my mind and want to sell it then I feel you could get more for the knife with the box.

I will not normally buy a knife without the box.

The price reduction is dependent on the price range of the knife, but more often then not I pass on a knife without a box.

I rarely sell knifes. At some point I expect I will, but not up till now.

It can effect the sales price-depending on the knife and condition. If you plan to keep the knife forever, and you don't care about the box, then throw them. But if you ever might sell, ithe future buyer may care and price accordingly.
I keep them, for I have been known to sell, even knives I thought I never would.

I now keep all my boxes unfortunately, they take up space and I honestly believe that having the box when one sells a knife says nothing about how the knife was treated. I do understand with the more expensive knives with COAs, that the box is a part of the sale everybody wants but I find it fascinating that if I sell a well kept less expensive knife for say $75, most people ask if it comes with the box.

If I'm buying a user grade knife I don't care if it has a box or not. If I'm buying a knife that is relatively new I would prefer to get the box because if I decide to sell the knife before I have used it much the box will usually help with the resale.

I guess I get it. I’ve been on an “Unclutter my life” kick lately saving empty boxes seemed like a good target. Rifle boxes are gone which was easy as I’m keeping everything, handguns I’m looking into, knives, the breaking down thing has my attention.

I uhhhh....I mean, this. This right here. This is what I was going to say.

Whenever I see a nice knife for sale with no box. Makes me wonder why anyone would ever throw a box away for such a thing.

I keep big plastic storage bin and pack them in sensibly with dehumidifier packs. Something else will get gone if storage ever becomes a problem.

My thought is that they lose 10-20% resale value without it. Especially for those of us that buy them as gifts.

Maybe if there was no chance of deciding to sell it. But tastes evolve and new stuff that must be had hits the market.

Different strokes and all. :)

I have no intent of selling any of my knives. So usually, the box goes in the trash.
I use every knife I buy, because I can't make a personal evaluation of the design unless I use it.

If I bought knives for the collection value and to swap and trade, that would be something else. But I don't, so the box usually goes in the trash.

I keep the boxes for knives (or anything else) I might want to sell later on.

Started doing that for model railroad stuff and RC trucks/cars, helps with packing to ship.

I keep all my boxes because it's a nice way to store the knives when I'm not using them. I have about 50 in my collection and I've used almost all of them at one point or another, but realistically only about 10 of them get used regularly.

Great timing.

I have all of my boxes, but I’m doing some decluttering and will likely toss all but perhaps those for knives I intend to sell or give away. I’ll keep the COAs for posterity on the rest and a CRK box for spare parts, grease, etc.

Also the Grimsmo box stays.

The box goes in the trash and the knife is put to use. I don't buy anything with the intention of reselling it. When I get knives in fancy boxes and felt bags, I think the manufacturer is wasting my money. Knives to me are tools. I enjoy them by using them.

I keep all the boxes , and I store the knives in their original boxes. Every box I have gotten has the name of the knife on the end, so it's a quick way to identify what is in the box. I include the receipt for the knife in the box, so I know when I bought it and what I paid. All of my knives are users, and I like them all a lot. They get rotated so all get their turn in the pocket.
Exceptions are usually with fixed blade knives. Most of mine are by custom makers and did not come with a box to start with. My biggest problem with fixed blades is keeping the sheaths sorted out.

Depends, vast majority I trash the box. I do keep tubes/boxes on my higher end stuff. They do start to pile up however.

I keep the boxes of all of my knives. A place to store one not in use. A box to gift wrap a knife I've decided to gift. Even the boxes of the knives that I buy that have a low QC and become a beater knife. Even a beater knife may die and will need a coffin.

Most importantly, anyone who sees my shelves will get curious and ask about what they are seeing.

Even non-collectors will want to talk about knives like we do!

Damascus has a similar result.
