I took my spyderco sage 1 apart today to do a good cleaning. I noticed before that the one scale screw didn't want to come out. Well today I got it out.

I hope one of the on line knife supply stores have one of these standoffs.

Oh dear, how did that happen? I don't know of any Torx driver that can do that by taking a screw out. That looks like a defective screw from the factory, and ought to be covered under warranty.

I hope I can get one. The Knife is back together but missing one screw. Still functions fine though.
The one standoff wouldn't come out. So a pair of pliers on the other end was a bad move on my part. Live and learn, right! It was the pliers not the torx driver. (it crimped the threads)

Next time a little more finesse ;)

I like to use rubber/plastic jaw covers and 800 grit sand paper for a better grip.

Spyderco customer service emailed me today and said I voided the warranty by taking the knife apart. However they would check to see if they have one laying around, maybe a used one they could ship out. Fingers crossed.
I guess only the made in golden knives are easy to send repair parts for.
I told her that I know it's my fault but I'm a knife nut!

Voiding the warranty by disassembly is pretty lame. I have taken apart a few dozen knives and have never damaged a thing. Never even lost a part. There isn't a good way to full clean a knife without taking it apart. Looks like I will be sticking more closely to ZT and Kershaw in the future.

Next time put the screw back in before crimping/pulling.

Spyderco to the rescue! They sent me the part. All fixed! I learned a little something too! Thank you spyderco. I just posted the story on spyderco subforum as well.

So I realized a few days ago that the title of this thread is a pun.

Glad everything worked out. The narrowly averted warranty issues are still kind of lame, though. Maybe Spyderco should keep more spare parts for the popular models stateside.
